FG Converts UNIMED Teaching Hospital to Federal University Teaching Hospital, Akure — A Major Leap for Ondo’s Healthcare System
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
In a landmark development that underscores the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to healthcare transformation and medical education, the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Akure, has officially been converted into the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Akure (FUTHA), Ondo State.

The unveiling, handover, and signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the hospital’s transition took place in Akure on Thursday, with the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the event.
This historic change, according to Akahi News, marks a major milestone in the Federal Government’s effort to strengthen healthcare delivery, expand tertiary health services, and advance medical training across Nigeria.
A Symbol of Renewed Federal–State Cooperation
In his remarks, Prof. Pate expressed profound appreciation to the Ondo State Government for its seamless collaboration throughout the conversion process, commending Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for his vision, support, and administrative cooperation.
“This partnership between the Federal Government and the Ondo State Government is a model of effective intergovernmental cooperation,” Prof. Pate said. “It demonstrates our collective resolve to bring quality healthcare closer to the people and expand access to world-class medical services.”
Akahi News gathered that the MoU signing formalised the transfer of ownership, operation, and management of the facility from the Ondo State Government to the Federal Government, paving the way for its rebranding as a national centre of medical excellence.
Strengthening Health Systems Through Strategic Expansion
Speaking further, Prof. Pate reiterated President Tinubu’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s health and social systems through increased federal investment, institutional upgrades, and improved coordination between states and the federal health agencies.
“The Federal Government remains determined to expand the reach, equity, and quality of healthcare services across the country,” he affirmed. “The establishment of the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Akure, is a major step toward achieving that goal.”
According to Akahi News, the new hospital will not only serve as a hub for advanced medical training and research but will also strengthen specialist care in critical areas such as maternal health, internal medicine, surgery, and infectious disease management.
Health analysts who spoke with Akahi News described the move as “timely and strategic,” noting that it will boost healthcare access in Ondo State and surrounding regions, reduce patient referrals to distant facilities, and improve the training environment for medical students.
Deji of Akure Commends Tinubu and Pate
The traditional ruler of Akure Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, Odundun II, also lauded President Tinubu for fulfilling his promise to the people of Akure.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu promised that this conversion would be done — and today, he has fulfilled that promise,” the monarch declared. “We thank him, and we also appreciate Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate for his tireless efforts in transforming the health sector.”
The Deji noted that the establishment of the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Akure, will redefine the healthcare landscape of the state capital, attract skilled medical professionals, and stimulate local economic growth through increased employment and infrastructural development.
Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate Honoured with Chieftaincy Title
In recognition of his leadership and contribution to the advancement of healthcare and social welfare, the Deji of Akure conferred a prestigious chieftaincy title — “Okoredeola of Akure Kingdom” — on Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate.
Akahi News learnt that the honour symbolises the community’s appreciation of the minister’s dedication to improving public health services and strengthening institutional partnerships across the country.
The ceremony was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, and healthcare professionals, who described the moment as a convergence of tradition, governance, and progress.
Akahi News Insight
From an Akahi News perspective, the conversion of UNIMED Teaching Hospital to a Federal University Teaching Hospital represents more than a structural change — it is a transformational shift with far-reaching implications for healthcare access, education, and research in Nigeria.
This initiative not only expands federal presence in Ondo State but also ensures that medical students, practitioners, and patients alike benefit from better facilities, modern equipment, and a more robust administrative framework.
Akahi News also notes that this development aligns perfectly with the Tinubu administration’s broader agenda of achieving “Renewed Hope” through improved service delivery, localised healthcare innovation, and enhanced institutional accountability.
In essence, the transition of the teaching hospital in Akure is a bold step toward a more inclusive, resilient, and efficient Nigerian health system, with the potential to influence similar state–federal collaborations nationwide.
As Ondo State and the Federal Government embark on this new chapter of partnership, the people of Akure and the wider Niger Delta region can look forward to a brighter, healthier future, backed by stronger medical infrastructure and renewed national focus on human capital development.
Akahi News will continue to monitor post-conversion activities at the new Federal University Teaching Hospital, Akure, and provide updates on its impact on healthcare delivery and medical education in Nigeria.
