FG Denies Signing Agreements With ASUU, Says Documents Were Mere Proposals

The Federal Government has dismissed claims that it signed binding agreements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), insisting that the documents often cited by the union were only proposals.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made the clarification on Thursday while addressing journalists in Abuja.
No Signed Agreement
According to the minister, the 2009 and 2011 documents frequently referenced by ASUU as valid agreements were never signed, but rather proposals presented during negotiation processes.
“The documents ASUU has been referring to as agreements were just proposals that were never signed,” Alausa explained.
Tinubu Administration’s Position
Dr. Alausa stressed that the Bola Tinubu administration remains committed to addressing lingering issues with the lecturers’ union, despite the misconceptions surrounding the status of the past documents.
He also dismissed reports that he had scheduled a meeting with ASUU and the Minister of Labour and Employment, describing such claims as inaccurate.
Way Forward
While reiterating government’s commitment to sustainable dialogue, the minister urged all stakeholders to remain focused on constructive engagement aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s university system and avoiding prolonged industrial disputes.
