Final Year Celebrations Turn Tragic: Student Dies in IMT Enugu Car Accident
A female student was tragically killed in a car accident on Monday at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu, where students were celebrating their final examinations. According to an unnamed witness, one of the graduating students, in a festive mood, was driving recklessly when the vehicle reportedly experienced brake failure and plowed into a crowd, hitting several students before running over the victim.

A video circulating on various WhatsApp groups captured the aftermath of the incident, showing students lifting the car while the body of the unidentified victim lay beneath it. The IMT management has confirmed the occurrence of the accident.
In a circular released on Tuesday, Acting Rector Emeka Ejim stated he had consistently warned students against “riotous and excessive celebration.” He clarified that the deceased was not an IMT student but rather a student from Peaceland University, which is located nearby. She had come to visit one of the injured students.
Mr. Ejim reported that, in addition to the victim, two other female students from the public administration department sustained injuries in the accident. The injured students are currently receiving treatment at Posh Hospital in New Haven, Enugu. One is a first-year HND student, while the other is in her second year. He noted that one of the injured students would be transferred to the Orthopaedic Hospital Enugu on Wednesday due to X-ray results indicating a fractured leg.
In light of the incident, Mr. Ejim announced the indefinite suspension of all final-year examinations at the institution. “The Academic Board and management will convene an emergency meeting on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. to discuss the matter further,” he said.

The institution’s spokesperson, Mark Eze, emphasized the need for an investigation into the accident, expressing concern over students ignoring warnings about celebratory behavior. “Despite all our warnings, these students still engaged in the type of celebrations that led to this incident,” said Eze, who is also a lawyer.
