Readings: First Reading: Micah 6:1–4, 6–8 Gospel: Matthew 12:38–42

God Desires Obedience More Than Empty Religious Activities

The readings for today present a powerful reminder that God is not impressed by outward displays of religion that are not accompanied by sincere obedience and righteous living. Through the prophet Micah, God challenges His people to reflect on His goodness and asks what He truly requires of them. In the Gospel, Jesus confronts those who demanded miraculous signs while refusing to believe the truth already before them.

Together, these readings invite every Christian to move beyond superficial faith and embrace a life of genuine holiness.

1. God Wants a Transformed Heart, Not Mere Religious Performance

In the first reading, the people ask what sacrifices they should offer to please God. They wonder whether burnt offerings, thousands of rams or rivers of oil would be enough. God’s answer is both simple and profound: He desires justice, mercy and humble fellowship with Him.

Many believers today can easily become occupied with attending church programmes, making donations or participating in religious activities while neglecting honesty, kindness and compassion in daily life. True worship begins with a heart that reflects God’s character.

Our relationship with God should transform the way we speak, work, forgive and relate with others.

2. Justice and Mercy Are the Foundation of Christian Living

Micah summarises God’s expectations in one of the most memorable passages in Scripture: “To act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Justice means treating people fairly regardless of their status. Mercy means forgiving, helping and showing compassion even when it is difficult. Humility reminds us that everything we have comes from God.

A Christian who prays fervently but cheats others, spreads falsehood or refuses forgiveness has misunderstood the Gospel.

Our faith becomes credible when justice and mercy are visible in our everyday decisions.

3. Faith Should Not Depend on Constant Miracles

In the Gospel, some scribes and Pharisees ask Jesus for a sign to prove His authority. Despite witnessing numerous miracles, they still refused to believe.

Jesus rebukes them because genuine faith grows from openness to God’s word rather than an endless demand for extraordinary signs.

Many people today continue searching for spectacular miracles while ignoring God’s daily guidance through Scripture, prayer, conscience and the teachings of the Church.

God often speaks quietly before He performs extraordinary works.

4. Every Person Is Responsible for Responding to God’s Invitation

Jesus points to the people of Nineveh, who repented after Jonah’s preaching, and to the Queen of the South, who travelled a great distance to hear Solomon’s wisdom.

If these people responded positively with the limited knowledge they possessed, then Christians who have received the fullness of Christ’s teaching carry an even greater responsibility.

God judges people not merely by what they know but by how they respond to the truth they have received.

Every day presents another opportunity to choose conversion over complacency.

5. Genuine Discipleship Is Seen in Daily Character

The central message running through both readings is that authentic faith is revealed through everyday conduct.

God is not searching for perfect people but for humble hearts willing to obey Him. A person who practises honesty, forgives readily, helps the needy, defends the weak and remains faithful in ordinary duties is offering God a pleasing sacrifice.

Christianity is not simply about what happens inside the church building; it is demonstrated in homes, workplaces, schools and communities.

Our lives should become living testimonies of God’s love.

Today’s readings challenge every believer to examine whether our faith is genuine or merely ceremonial.

It is possible to appear deeply religious while remaining spiritually distant from God. The Lord calls us beyond appearances into a relationship marked by justice, mercy, humility and unwavering trust.

Rather than constantly asking God for extraordinary signs, we should recognise the countless ways He already reveals Himself through His Word, His Church and the ordinary events of daily life.

The greatest miracle may not be what God does around us but what He transforms within us.

Prayer

Lord, give us hearts that seek You sincerely rather than merely performing religious duties. Teach us to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with You every day. Help us to recognise Your presence without demanding signs and make our lives faithful witnesses to the Gospel of Christ. Amen.
