FIVE SECURITY OFFICERS ARRESTED OVER ALLEGED BRIBERY LINKED TO EL-RUFAI’S AIRPORT ACCESS

Five security officers attached to major federal agencies have been arrested following an alleged breach of security protocols at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, involving former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

The incident, which reportedly occurred on February 12, 2026, has triggered a joint inter-agency investigation and renewed scrutiny of compliance standards at Nigeria’s busiest federal airport.

Joint Probe Reveals Serious Breach

According to an official statement issued on Tuesday, the arrests followed a coordinated investigation conducted by the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), and the Federal Ministry of Aviation.

Security authorities stated that five officers allegedly accepted bribes to grant unauthorised access into restricted operational areas of the airport shortly after El-Rufai arrived from overseas.

The detained officers were identified as Ayuba Yakubu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police; Murtala Inuwa, a DSS operative; Najeeb Murtala, an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration; and Musa Adamu and Salihu Victor, both Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel.

Officials involved in the investigation disclosed that the five men allegedly confessed to receiving financial inducements in exchange for facilitating the unauthorised entry. The DSS described the development as an obstruction of lawful security operations carried out in an “unprecedented manner”.

Handed Over to Anti-Graft Agency

Following the conclusion of preliminary investigations, the officers were transferred to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for prosecution.

In its statement, the security agency said the joint probe established that the officers’ actions compromised established airport security procedures and undermined coordinated inter-agency operations.

Authorities also clarified that some officers from the NIS and NCS who did not allegedly receive bribes but were found to have misused their official uniforms to facilitate access will face internal administrative disciplinary measures.

Broader Security Implications

Aviation experts say restricted zones within international airports are tightly regulated under global aviation security frameworks, including standards aligned with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Unauthorised access into such areas can disrupt security architecture, interfere with surveillance systems, and create potential vulnerabilities.

NAIA, as Nigeria’s primary gateway to the federal capital, plays a critical role in diplomatic travel, intelligence operations, and international connectivity. Any breach, particularly involving high-profile individuals, raises questions about procedural enforcement and internal oversight.

Security analysts note that inter-agency rivalry, inadequate supervision, and the influence of political stature sometimes test the integrity of established protocols. However, they emphasise that uniform rules must apply to all travellers regardless of political standing.

No Official Response from El-Rufai

As of press time, there has been no formal response from Nasir El-Rufai regarding the allegations or the circumstances surrounding his airport access on the date in question.

It is important to note that the investigation’s findings are based on statements from security authorities. The suspects remain entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law.

Renewed Focus on Accountability

The swift detention and transfer of the officers to the ICPC suggest an attempt by authorities to demonstrate institutional accountability. In recent years, aviation security compliance has come under increasing review, especially amid global concerns over airport vulnerabilities.

Observers argue that the outcome of the prosecution will send a strong signal about the federal government’s resolve to enforce discipline within security agencies and protect critical national infrastructure.

The case also reinforces a longstanding debate in Nigeria about the intersection of political influence and institutional integrity. Whether this prosecution will mark a turning point in strengthening airport security enforcement remains to be seen.
