FRSC to Launch Contactless Biometric Driver’s Licence Printing Nationwide

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans to roll out a contactless biometric capture and on-the-spot driver’s licence printing system, marking a major step toward full digitalisation of Nigeria’s licensing process and the end of temporary licences.
According to reports obtained by Akahi News, Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed disclosed the development during the launch of the 2025 ember months public enlightenment and sensitisation campaign on Monday in Abuja.
Mohammed said the new system would establish a one-stop digital process for obtaining driver’s licences across the country, reducing delays and resolving long-standing challenges in the national licensing system.
“We are about to commence the contactless biometric capture with on-spot printing of the licence,” the Corps Marshal said. “This will eliminate temporary licences, signalling the beginning of a digitalised one-stop shop for processing driver’s licence.”
A Step Toward a Fully Digital Licensing System
Akahi News reports that the FRSC’s new initiative represents a bold move toward modernising Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure through advanced technology.
By implementing contactless biometric verification and instant licence production, the corps aims to enhance data accuracy, strengthen security, and ensure greater efficiency in public service delivery.
Mohammed explained that the digital transformation would not only reduce processing time but also address the nationwide backlog of pending driver’s licences.
“With this development, delays and other challenges related to the national driver’s licence will be history,” he assured.
FRSC Boosts Licence Production to 15,000 Daily
In a report cited by Akahi News, Mohammed revealed that the corps has increased daily licence production to 15,000 and intends to clear all outstanding applications by November 2025, thanks to the recent upgrade of its printing facility.
He stated that out of the 800,000 licences backlogged nationwide, about 400,000 have been printed, while 206,000 remain uncollected. He urged applicants to visit designated centres to collect their licences promptly.
“We are committed to improving service delivery through technology. The enhanced system will reduce waiting times, improve data integrity, and fast-track processing for all categories of drivers,” he said.
Building on Earlier Innovations
As reported by Akahi News, this innovation follows the February 2025 inauguration of a mini driver’s licence printing farm in Lagos State, which produces up to 9,000 licences in six hours.
The Lagos facility, designed to ease congestion and reduce delays for applicants awaiting licences from Abuja, serves as a model for future technology-driven licensing operations nationwide.
The FRSC’s digital drive aligns with the Federal Government’s broader modernisation agenda, which seeks to improve transparency, reduce bureaucracy, and enhance citizen access to essential services.
Updated Fees for Driver’s Licences
Meanwhile, Akahi News recalls that the Joint Tax Board (JTB) approved a new price structure for driver’s licences and vehicle number plates earlier this year. The new fees, which took effect on June 8, 2025, apply nationwide as follows:
- Motor Vehicle Driver’s Licence (3 years): ₦15,000
- Motor Vehicle Driver’s Licence (5 years): ₦21,000
- Tricycle Driver’s Licence (3 years): ₦7,000
- Tricycle Driver’s Licence (5 years): ₦11,000
Previous adjustments were made in 2021, raising the three-year licence from ₦6,000 to ₦10,000 and the five-year licence from ₦10,000 to ₦15,000, respectively.
