In a major step toward improving rural infrastructure and enhancing living standards, the Governor of Cross River State, Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, has officially flagged off the rehabilitation of electricity in Nde community, Ikom Local Government Area.

The project, unveiled amid cheers from residents and local leaders, marks another milestone in the administration’s drive to restore power supply to underserved communities across the state, with a view to boosting socio-economic development.
A Boost for Rural Development
Speaking on behalf of Governor Otu at the flag-off ceremony, the Director General of the State Electrification Agency, Hon. Francis Ekpo, emphasised the importance of the initiative in transforming rural life.
He explained that access to reliable electricity was not just about lighting homes but also about empowering small businesses, strengthening education, improving healthcare delivery, and attracting investments to rural areas.
“This administration is committed to the People First agenda, and ensuring equitable access to basic amenities like electricity is central to that vision,” Hon. Ekpo stated.
Call for Community Ownership
Hon. Ekpo urged the people of Nde to take ownership of the project and protect the infrastructure from vandalism and sabotage, which he described as the greatest threats to sustainable development in rural communities.
“Government invests huge resources into projects like this, but without the support of the people, our efforts could be wasted. We want to see a partnership where residents safeguard these facilities for the benefit of all,” he said.
Traditional Leaders Pledge Support
In his remarks, the Clan Head of Nde, HRH (Engr.) Bassey Nas, lauded Governor Otu for prioritising rural electrification, pledging that the community would play its part in ensuring the success of the project.
“We assure the Governor that no government property will be vandalised in this community again. We are ready to collaborate fully with the state to ensure this project delivers lasting benefits,” the monarch promised.
The Councillor representing the ward echoed the traditional ruler’s sentiments, highlighting the community’s readiness to mobilise support for the initiative.
Technical Backing for Sustainability
Also speaking at the ceremony, Engr. Innocent Inaku, Manager of the Ogoja Sub-Region, commended the Governor’s timely intervention and pledged the technical team’s full commitment to ensure the project’s long-term sustainability.
“Our goal is not just to restore power but to make sure the system is durable and reliable so that the people can enjoy uninterrupted supply for years to come,” he said.
Powering a Brighter Future
The electricity rehabilitation project in Nde community reflects the Otu administration’s broader vision of tackling infrastructural gaps in rural areas, creating opportunities for economic growth, and improving the quality of life for residents.
With community leaders, government agencies, and technical experts aligning their efforts, the initiative is expected to set a template for similar interventions across other local government areas in the state.
