Governor Mbah Receives Outgoing, Incoming Commanders of Ogurugu Naval Base, Pledges Deeper Collaboration on Security and Development
Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Nigerian Navy as he received the outgoing and incoming commanders of the NNS Madueke, Ogurugu Naval Base, located in Uzo Uwani Local Government Area. The visit underscored the strategic importance of the base to Enugu’s wider security, economic, and infrastructural ambitions.
Akahi News learnt that the outgoing Commanding Officer, Navy Commodore A. O. Odejobi, who has been redeployed to the Naval Headquarters, was formally presented alongside his successor, Navy Commodore N. Frinday, during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Enugu.

“Your outstanding service has left a lasting impact. The cooperation between the Navy and our security architecture over the past months has significantly improved safety in vulnerable riverine areas,” the governor said, as Akahi News gathered from the meeting.
Observers noted that under Commodore Odejobi’s leadership, the presence and effectiveness of the Naval Base in Ogurugu became more pronounced, contributing to deterrence against criminal activities on the waterways.
Assurance of Support for the Incoming Commander
Welcoming Commodore N. Frinday, Governor Mbah reaffirmed his administration’s willingness to work closely with the Nigerian Navy to secure the state and advance its development goals. He assured the new commander of full support, emphasising that Enugu is making deliberate investments in modern security infrastructure and surveillance systems to complement military and naval efforts.
Akahi News gathered that the governor specifically highlighted ongoing plans to upgrade critical infrastructure around the Ogurugu axis, with the aim of transforming NNS Madueke into a more active and operationally-effective base.
“Our goal is to improve riverine safety, enhance navigational access, support agro-logistics linked to Ogurugu Port, and strengthen our joint efforts in combating criminality in these waterways,” Mbah stated.
Navy’s Role in Enugu’s Agro-Industrial Vision
Beyond security, the governor stressed that the Nigerian Navy plays a strategic role in Enugu’s agricultural expansion, agro-industrial development, and evolving river transport system. According to him, safe and secure waterways are essential for moving agricultural produce, encouraging investments, and opening up riverine communities to broader economic opportunities.
He added that sustained peace in the region would further boost investor confidence and contribute to the success of the state’s ambitious development blueprint.
Akahi News noted that this renewed partnership aligns with Governor Mbah’s broader policy direction, which prioritises safety, technological innovation, and infrastructure development as the pillars of sustainable growth in Enugu State.
Strengthening Civil-Military Relations
The meeting ended on a positive note, with both naval officers expressing gratitude for the support received and pledging continued dedication to service. Commodore Frinday assured the governor of his commitment to maintaining high standards and strengthening cooperation with other security agencies and the host communities.
Analysts believe that this type of engagement between political leadership and the armed forces is critical in fostering mutual trust, ensuring operational effectiveness, and promoting peace in strategically significant regions such as Ogurugu and the surrounding riverine communities.
As Akahi News gathered, stakeholders across the state have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the strengthened relationship between Enugu State Government and the Nigerian Navy will yield lasting benefits for security and economic progress.
