HOLY FAMILY SUNDAY 2025: Rev. Fr. Pius Odediran Calls on Families to Rediscover Love, Prayer and God’s Original Design

As Christians across the world marked Holy Family Sunday, Rev. Fr. Pius Odediran delivered a deeply reflective and spiritually charged homily that centred on the enduring relevance of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as the timeless model for every Christian home.

Speaking during the final Sunday celebration of 2025, the priest reminded worshippers that the feast of the Holy Family is not merely ceremonial but a powerful call to rediscover the sacred foundation upon which every society stands — the family.

According to Rev. Fr. Odediran, the survival, stability, and moral health of society depend largely on how families are built, nurtured, and sustained. “The family is the smallest unit of the Church,” he noted, stressing that when families are weak, the Church and society inevitably suffer.

The Family as God’s Sacred Design

In his homily, which Akahi News gathered was received with deep reflection among parishioners, the cleric emphasised that the family is not a human invention but a divine institution established by God Himself.

“The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph is the perfect model of what every Christian family should aspire to be,” he said. “God created the family intentionally — father, mother and children — each with a unique role.”

Rev. Fr. Odediran strongly reaffirmed the biblical foundation of the family, referencing the book of Genesis to explain that God created humanity male and female, not as an accident of biology but as a divine purpose.

“He did not take the rib of Adam to create another man for him,” the priest stressed. “Rather, God took Adam’s rib to create a woman — biologically and functionally distinct — to complement him. Any other form of union presented as family contradicts God’s original design.”

According to Akahi News, the message resonated strongly amid global conversations on family structures and moral values, as the homily boldly upheld Christian doctrine while calling for compassion and understanding.

The Biblical Structure of the Family

Drawing from the First Reading, Rev. Fr. Odediran explained that Scripture clearly outlines the structure and responsibilities within the family. He cited Sirach, which affirms the authority of parents and the responsibility of children.

“The Lord honours the father in his children; a mother’s authority he confirms over her sons.”

He noted that every member of the family is important and irreplaceable, each playing a divinely assigned role that ensures harmony and stability.

In his words, “A family where roles are confused or abandoned becomes vulnerable to chaos.”

The Responsibility of Children and Parents

The homilist placed special emphasis on the responsibility of children towards their parents, describing obedience and honour as essential Christian virtues.

Quoting St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he reminded the congregation:

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honour your father and mother — this is the first commandment with a promise — that it may go well with you.”

According to Akahi News, Rev. Fr. Odediran stressed that obedience is not slavery but a pathway to blessing, order, and long life.

At the same time, parents were admonished not to provoke or embitter their children but to lead with love, patience, and understanding.

Christian Virtues That Sustain Families

In the second reading, St. Paul lists virtues essential for healthy family life — compassion, kindness, humility, patience, and forgiveness.

Rev. Fr. Odediran lamented that many homes today are characterised by anger, resentment, and emotional distance rather than love and peace.

“Many families wear the garment of hatred instead of the garment of love,” he observed. “Yet Scripture tells us clearly: ‘Put on love, and let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.’”

He explained that forgiveness is not optional in Christian family life, but a spiritual necessity for healing and unity.

Prayer and Unity: Lessons from the Holy Family

Reflecting on the Gospel reading, the priest highlighted two defining qualities of the Holy Family — prayer and unity of purpose.

Mary and Joseph, he explained, acted together in faith when they presented Jesus in the temple. They also stood united when they fled to Egypt to protect their child from Herod’s threat.

“They prayed together, decided together, and moved together,” he said. “That unity preserved their family in times of danger.”

According to Akahi News, Rev. Fr. Odediran urged families to rediscover the power of shared prayer, especially in moments of crisis.

“Families that pray together survive storms together,” he noted.

A Call to Renew the Family in Modern Times

As society grapples with moral confusion, broken homes, and declining family values, the homily served as a timely reminder of the need to return to God’s original plan.

Rev. Fr. Odediran encouraged families to intentionally model themselves after Jesus, Mary, and Joseph — embracing love, obedience, sacrifice, and faith.

He concluded with a heartfelt prayer:

“Jesus, Mary and Joseph, make our hearts like unto yours.”

The message, according to Akahi News, left many parishioners spiritually uplifted and reflective as they embraced the Christmas season with renewed commitment to family life.

Holy Family Sunday 2025 served not just as a liturgical celebration but as a spiritual mirror, inviting families to evaluate their foundations. Rev. Fr. Pius Odediran’s homily reaffirmed that the strength of society begins at home — where love, faith, obedience, and prayer must reign.

As the year draws to a close, the message is clear: when families align themselves with God’s design, they become channels of peace, stability, and hope for the world.
