Ikom LGA Begins Allocation of Land for Commodity Market, Mechanic Village, and Warehouses
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
The Ikom Local Government Council of Cross River State has announced the commencement of land allocation for the establishment of a Commodity/Spare Parts Market, Mechanic Village, and Warehouses at Okuni Village along the Ikom/Calabar highway. The development, spearheaded by the Executive Chairman of Ikom Local Government Area, Hon. Pst. (Mrs) Mercy Nsor, is aimed at boosting trade, enhancing economic activities, and creating new opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship in the region.

In a press statement issued on Monday, 25th August 2025, by the Chief Press Secretary to the Council Chairman, Ntemoyuk Christopher Ntemoyuk, the local government revealed that the allocation process is open to all individuals and business operators who are interested in acquiring plots of land to build shops, warehouses, or other commercial premises. The initiative, according to the Council, seeks to provide an enabling environment for traders, artisans, and entrepreneurs to operate within well-structured and designated markets.
Economic Impact and Opportunities
The establishment of the Commodity/Spare Parts Market and Mechanic Village is expected to transform the economic landscape of Ikom and surrounding areas. Akahi News gathered that the project will serve as a centralised hub for buying and selling goods and services, particularly spare parts, mechanical services, and warehousing for bulk commodities.
According to the release, the project will not only provide modern facilities for business owners but will also stimulate local commerce, create new employment opportunities, and increase government revenue. The Council emphasised that such initiatives are crucial in driving sustainable development, reducing unemployment, and positioning Ikom as a strategic trade and business hub within Cross River State.
Open Invitation to Traders and Entrepreneurs
The Council extended a formal invitation to all businessmen, women traders, and the general public who are willing to invest in the new market to take advantage of the allocation exercise. Interested applicants have been encouraged to present themselves for consideration, as the Council is determined to make the process transparent and inclusive.
Speaking on the benefits, the Council noted that the project would bridge existing gaps in organised trading facilities in the region, provide safer and more conducive business spaces, and foster long-term investments for both small-scale and large-scale entrepreneurs.
Government’s Commitment to Local Development
Hon. Pst. (Mrs) Mercy Nsor reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to driving grassroots development through initiatives that promote self-reliance and prosperity. The statement stressed that the Commodity Market, Mechanic Village, and Warehouses would become a landmark project for Ikom, reflecting the Council’s vision to empower residents and reposition the area as an economic powerhouse within the state.

This development has been widely welcomed by residents and traders, with many describing it as a timely intervention to address the challenges of unorganised trading, lack of space, and rising unemployment.
