Despite the taboo surrounding romantic liaisons between colleagues, an October 2023 survey focusing on the Top 10 professions where individuals in committed relationships are most likely to engage in infidelity revealed that 85% of affairs occur within the workplace. Shockingly, one in five employees admitted to being unfaithful with a fellow coworker.
The authors of the report, conducted by the online gambling platform RantCasino, highlighted, “The allure of forbidden relationships can be quite tempting, particularly in an environment that demands professionalism and the upholding of boundaries.” They noted that many individuals find it challenging to resist the temptation, leading to workplace affairs. Laura O’Brien, a chief spokesperson for RantCasino, explained to The Post that office infidelity is remarkably common, often stemming from overworked employees seeking stress relief and support from their colleagues. The workplace, where individuals often present their best selves, share lunches, and take regular coffee breaks, unquestionably becomes a fertile ground for illicit relationships to develop.
O’Brien also pointed out that besides physical affairs, the survey indicated a prevalence of emotional affairs. This suggests that individuals are drawn to colleagues who comprehend the intensity and challenges of their shared professional roles.
The survey, which garnered insights from 3,800 respondents in the UK, including 1,644 who admitted to engaging in romantic relationships with coworkers, aimed to identify which professional industries most frequently became the backdrop for inappropriate workplace dalliances.
