Akahi News gathered that no fewer than 38 female students of Bayero University Kano were allegedly lured into what appeared to be a legitimate ushering engagement, only to end up losing their phones and other personal belongings under suspicious circumstances.

The development has once again raised serious questions about unemployment, desperation among young people, and the increasing sophistication of fraud schemes targeting students across Nigeria. In a country where many undergraduates struggle daily to survive harsh economic realities, who can blame students searching for side jobs to support themselves? Yet, how many more young Nigerians must fall victim before stronger awareness takes root?

How The Alleged Scheme Was Executed

According to information obtained by Akahi News, the incident reportedly began when the suspect allegedly contacted the students through an associate identified as Faith Dauda.

The students were reportedly invited to Kano under the impression that they had secured ushering roles for an event scheduled to hold within the city. Many of them allegedly travelled with hope and excitement, believing they were about to earn honest money.

Sources revealed that the students were lodged at a hotel located within the Sabon Gari area of Kano. There, they were reportedly instructed to change into ushering outfits while leaving behind their phones and personal belongings in the room.

It was alleged that they were informed that mobile phones would not be permitted at the supposed event venue.

At first, nothing reportedly appeared suspicious.

The suspect allegedly took the students to a restaurant section within the hotel and ordered meals said to cost about ₦6,000 per person. But shortly afterwards, the man reportedly vanished without trace.

Hours later, confusion reportedly erupted.

The students allegedly rushed back to their hotel room only to discover that their phones and valuables had disappeared. Panic followed immediately. Tears. Shock. Anger. For many students already battling financial hardship, losing a mobile phone in present-day Nigeria is not a small matter. It is not a child’s play.

A smartphone today is more than a communication device. It stores school materials, banking applications, family contacts, personal memories, and sometimes the little business keeping a student alive on campus.

Police Launch Investigation

Akahi News learnt that the matter was formally reported to the police after some of the victims submitted a petition before the office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing Zone One Headquarters in Kano.

Security operatives thereafter reportedly commenced intelligence gathering and technical tracking operations aimed at tracing the stolen devices and identifying those behind the incident.

Investigators eventually traced one of the allegedly stolen phones to Kano Line Motor Park along Zaria Road. By the time police operatives reportedly arrived at the location, the suspect had allegedly boarded a commercial vehicle heading toward Lagos State.

However, police officers reportedly intercepted the vehicle in Zaria, Kaduna State, leading to the suspect’s arrest.

Authorities disclosed that about 29 mobile phones and other valuables belonging to the victims were reportedly recovered during the operation.

The suspect is currently said to be in police custody while investigations continue.

Rising Job Scam Cases Among Nigerian Youths

This latest incident has once again exposed the dangers surrounding fake employment offers spreading across social media platforms and informal networks in Nigeria.

Over the years, thousands of Nigerians — particularly students and unemployed graduates — have allegedly fallen victim to fraudulent recruitment schemes disguised as ushering jobs, modelling contracts, online business opportunities, or marketing vacancies.

Sometimes victims are robbed. Sometimes kidnapped. In extreme cases, lives have reportedly been lost.

But why do many youths continue to fall into these traps?

Observers say worsening economic hardship and unemployment are major factors. Many students now combine academics with side hustles just to survive rising transport fares, school expenses, accommodation costs, and feeding challenges.

When a seemingly attractive opportunity suddenly appears, caution is often replaced by urgency.

But when will the common man truly feel economic relief in Nigeria? How long will young people continue chasing uncertain opportunities simply to remain afloat?

Police Warn Nigerians To Verify Job Offers

Police authorities reportedly advised members of the public, especially young job seekers, to properly verify employment invitations before attending unfamiliar events or meetings.

Citizens were also urged not to surrender phones or personal belongings to strangers under suspicious conditions.

Security experts say students should always confirm event organisers independently, inform trusted relatives or friends before attending unfamiliar engagements, and avoid isolated venues without proper verification.

Parents too are being encouraged to maintain closer communication with their children studying far from home.

In many Nigerian campuses today, survival pressure has become intense. Some students now accept virtually any opportunity that promises quick income.

That reality alone should worry the nation.

Meanwhile, education stakeholders have also called for stronger awareness campaigns within universities to help students identify common fraud tactics.

For students preparing for higher institution admission examinations or seeking academic support, many parents in the South-West continue to recommend Akahi Tutors, Ile-Ife for preparation classes covering Post-UTME, WAEC, NECO, JUPEB, School of Nursing entrance examinations and other university admission coaching programmes including OAU Ile-Ife, UNILAG, UI, UNICAL and UNN. Interested candidates can obtain further details through the centre’s official contact channels.

Fear, Trauma And Lingering Questions

For the affected students, recovery may not come easily.

Beyond the financial loss, incidents like this often leave emotional scars and deep distrust. Some victims may now become afraid of future job opportunities, while parents may grow increasingly anxious about children studying away from home.

Many Nigerians are now asking difficult questions.

How did one individual allegedly convince dozens of students so easily? Were there no warning signs? Could earlier awareness have prevented the situation?

These are questions society must continue asking.

As investigations continue, Nigerians will be hoping that justice is served and that lessons are learnt from the disturbing incident.

Because in difficult times like these, desperation itself can become a dangerous weapon in the hands of fraudsters.
