Lagos APC Declares Strong Backing for South-West Governors’ Demand for State Police
The debate over the creation of State Police gathered fresh momentum on Tuesday as the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) openly endorsed the call by South-West Governors urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to accelerate the long-awaited policing reform. The party described the proposal as both “timely and inevitable,” insisting that only those opposed to peace and stability would resist a system designed to protect citizens more effectively.
This latest position strengthens what Akahi News learnt to be a growing regional consensus in favour of decentralised policing, especially as insecurity continues to evolve across Nigeria.

A Renewed Push for Decentralised Policing
In its statement, the Lagos APC emphasised that the South-West has historically championed innovative security models. The party cited the Amotekun Corps and years of regional investment in community-based security as proof that locally empowered systems deliver faster response, better intelligence gathering, and stronger crime deterrence.
According to the party, the endorsement by governors aligns with President Tinubu’s previously expressed commitment to modernising Nigeria’s internal security framework — a point many observers told Akahi News reflects the administration’s willingness to embrace a multi-layered security structure.
Why State Police Has Become ‘Unavoidable’
The party argued that Nigeria’s current security challenges demand a system that moves policing closer to the people. A decentralised model, it noted, will allow states to design context-specific security strategies while working in harmony with federal institutions.
“The security challenges facing the country require multi-layered solutions. Properly designed and professionally regulated State Police will bring security closer to the people and strengthen real-time intelligence,” the statement stressed.
Analysts who spoke with newsmen and whose views were monitored by Akahi News noted that the insistence on State Police is no longer a partisan argument but a practical necessity, especially in light of ongoing threats facing rural communities, schools, highways, and urban centres.
Appeal for National Unity on Security Reforms
The Lagos APC also warned against politicising the debate, saying national security must remain above partisan lines. According to the party, attempts to misinterpret the issue for political gain only undermine public safety.
The party reaffirmed its confidence in the “Renewed Hope” security reforms and maintained that the South-West governors’ united stance indicates a serious commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
“The security of our people is non-negotiable. The time for State Police is now,” the statement concluded.
A Growing National Conversation
This latest endorsement adds to what Akahi News gathered as an expanding nationwide conversation about restructuring Nigeria’s security architecture. Several civil society organisations, security experts, and community groups have urged the Federal Government to embrace decentralised policing as a long-term antidote to kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, and violent crime.
With 2026 approaching and political activities beginning to take shape, analysts believe the renewed push for State Police will likely feature prominently in national debates and legislative considerations in the months ahead.
