Lagos Court Fines Woman ₦450,000 for Collecting Transport Fare Without Visiting Man
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
A Magistrate Court sitting in Lagos has handed down an unusual judgment against a young lady identified as Jennifer, ordering her to pay ₦450,000 in damages after she was found guilty of obtaining money under false pretences.

According to court documents, Jennifer allegedly received ₦30,000 from a man named Emmanuel, who claimed he sent her the money for transport fare in anticipation of her visiting him. However, she reportedly failed to turn up and subsequently cut off all communication.
Feeling deceived, Emmanuel filed a complaint before the court, describing the incident as “fraudulent extortion.” After reviewing the matter, the Magistrate ruled that Jennifer’s actions amounted to deception and financial exploitation, awarding Emmanuel compensation far beyond the original amount.
Court’s Warning on “Transport Fare Fraud”
The presiding Magistrate stressed that such cases of “transport fare fraud” were becoming alarmingly common and could be classified as a form of cyber-enabled extortion. The judgment, though surprising to many, was described as a deterrent aimed at discouraging similar misconduct.

Jennifer has now been directed to pay the ₦450,000 fine, with the court warning that failure to comply could attract further legal consequences.
