Lagos Police Halt Unapproved Egungun Festival, Arrest 12 Suspects Over Threats to Public Peace

Police Clamp Down on Group Restricting Public Movement

The Lagos State Police Command has ordered the suspension of an unapproved Egungun festival allegedly organised by a group identified as Oje Parapo of Oregun, following the circulation of posters and social media publications warning residents against free movement. Twelve suspects have already been arrested in connection with the unrest.

According to statements obtained by Akahi News, the group’s notices attempted to restrict the fundamental rights of Lagos residents, sparking fear and apprehension across Oregun and its environs.

A notice warning residents of Oregun about the traditional Egungun festival scheduled for November 27-28, 2025, advising them to stay indoors between 10 PM and 4 AM for safety and security.

Arrests Made; Similar Operation Conducted in Mafoluku

The Command confirmed the arrest of twelve suspects linked to the Oregun publications. They are currently undergoing investigation and will be prosecuted once inquiries are complete.

In a related incident, Akahi News learnt that police officers within the Makinde Division in Mafoluku, Oshodi, swiftly intervened on 23 November 2025 after a similar attempt to instigate disorder was discovered. Suspects were also apprehended in that operation.

Police officials noted that such warnings and restrictions issued by private groups undermine peace, security, and the rights of Lagosians.
