Lagos Slum Residents Benefit from Free Medical Outreach by Vital Health and Partners

Residents of a Lagos slum community in Lafiaji, located along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, received free medical care on Wednesday through a one-day outreach organised by Vital Health International in partnership with RCCG City of David, Atlanta (USA), and RCCG The Oasis, Lekki.

The community, largely made up of shanties, is home to many low-income earners who work on Lagos Island. The outreach aimed to provide essential healthcare services to residents who have limited access to medical facilities.

Dr Joe Tarkon, senior pastor of RCCG City of David in Atlanta and Chief Executive Officer of Vital Health International, led the mission alongside The Oasis parish team. The outreach included general consultations, pharmacy and medication dispensing, health education, medical referrals, and spiritual support.

Prior to attending to patients, the team, comprising doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and volunteers, visited the Baale of Lafiaji, Chief Wasiu Alli-Balogun, who welcomed them and expressed his support for the initiative.

Around ten doctors attended to patients throughout the day, providing much-needed medications and medical advice. Dr Tarkon expressed his satisfaction with the turnout, emphasising the importance of serving underserved communities.

He stated: “I’m very impressed. We find a sense of fulfilment to be able to contribute meaningfully to the health status and wellbeing of the people we see. We treated mothers with children and young adults, all of whom benefit greatly from this kind of support.”

Dr Tarkon explained that the choice of Lafiaji was deliberate, given its lack of adequate healthcare facilities. “People who live here are underrepresented by medical services. Driving through, I saw only one or two small clinics. For a large community like this, where people may not visit hospitals regularly, this outreach is vital. For instance, we attended to a woman with dangerously high blood pressure and fasting blood sugar—without intervention, she could have collapsed, and her condition could have been misinterpreted as something else.”

The outreach underscores the need for private organisations and faith-based institutions to complement public health efforts in underserved communities across Lagos State.

Akahi News gathered that similar initiatives are planned for other low-income areas in Lagos to ensure wider access to healthcare services.
