Makoko Demolition: Lagos Assembly Orders Immediate Suspension After Protests, Pledges Stakeholder Engagement
The Lagos State House of Assembly has ordered an immediate suspension of the planned demolition of houses and structures in the Makoko area of the state, following sustained protests and public outcry by residents, activists, and civil society organisations.
The directive was announced on Tuesday by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Noheem Adams, in an official statement issued on behalf of the lawmakers. According to Akahi News, the decision marks a significant pause in an exercise that had generated widespread tension within the waterfront community.

Protests Force Legislative Intervention
Akahi News gathered that the suspension came after a series of protests by Makoko residents and rights advocates who raised concerns about forced evictions, loss of livelihoods, and the absence of adequate consultation before the planned demolitions.
For days, activists and members of various civil society groups had openly challenged the move, describing it as insensitive and potentially unlawful if carried out without due process. Observers noted that the growing resistance compelled lawmakers to intervene to prevent further escalation.
Meeting With Community Representatives
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Hon. Adams disclosed that the House reached its decision after holding a meeting with representatives of the Makoko community. He explained that the engagement provided lawmakers with firsthand insight into the grievances and fears of affected residents.
According to Akahi News, Adams stated that the Assembly resolved to halt all demolition activities pending a thorough review of the issues surrounding the exercise.
“On behalf of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, and honourable members of this House, we are taking this matter seriously. All ongoing demolitions should be stopped,” Adams said.
Assembly Promises Review and Collaboration
The Majority Leader further revealed that the House would collaborate with relevant ministries, departments, and agencies to reassess the planned demolitions. He noted that the objective is to ensure that any future action aligns with the law, respects human dignity, and considers the socio-economic realities of the Makoko community.
Akahi News learnt that Adams also assured residents that all stakeholders would be properly engaged before any decision is taken, signalling a shift towards dialogue rather than unilateral enforcement.
Relief for Residents, Cautious Optimism Remains
The suspension has brought temporary relief to Makoko residents, many of whom had feared sudden displacement. However, analysts believe the situation remains delicate, as the long-term fate of the community will depend on the outcome of the promised reviews and consultations.
Urban development experts have repeatedly argued that while governments have a responsibility to regulate urban spaces, such actions must balance development goals with social justice and inclusive planning. The Makoko case, observers say, underscores the broader challenge of managing informal settlements in rapidly expanding cities like Lagos.
What Happens Next?
While the Assembly’s directive has halted demolitions for now, Akahi News gathered that residents and activists are urging the government to go beyond suspension and adopt a clear, humane policy framework for waterfront communities.
As discussions continue, many will be watching closely to see whether the Lagos State Government follows through on its pledge of stakeholder engagement or whether tensions resurface once the review process begins.
For now, the Assembly’s intervention has bought time — time that residents hope will lead to lasting solutions rather than another cycle of uncertainty.
