Massive Shake-Up Looms in Nigerian Military as Over 50 Senior Officers Set for Retirement

A major shake-up is imminent in the Nigerian Armed Forces following the recent appointment of new service chiefs by President Bola Tinubu, Akahi News has learnt. According to Tribune Online, over 50 senior military officers across the Army, Navy, and Air Force may be affected in a large-scale retirement exercise in the coming days.

New Service Chiefs Spark Hierarchical Restructuring

The President, in a move seen as part of a broader defence reform, announced Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Waidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff.

These appointments replaced General Christopher Musa, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, and Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, respectively. Sources told Tribune that the change at the top has triggered a restructuring process, which, by military tradition, will compel senior officers who are coursemates or seniors to the newly appointed chiefs to retire.

Senior Commanders and Directors Among Those Affected

According to reports obtained by Akahi News, the reshuffle will affect directors at the Army Headquarters, General Officers Commanding (GOCs), and other key commanders who are members of the 39th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy—senior to the new Chief of Army Staff from the 40th Regular Course.

A military source revealed that while some affected officers may be redeployed to the Defence Headquarters to work directly under the new Chief of Defence Staff, many others are expected to proceed on compulsory retirement.

Similar retirements are expected within the Air Force and Navy, where officers of the same course level as the outgoing chiefs will also have to vacate their positions.

Over 50 Senior Officers to Exit Service

Findings indicate that more than 50 high-ranking officers, including Major Generals, Air Vice Marshals, and Rear Admirals, could be affected across the three services. The move aligns with the longstanding military tradition that prohibits senior officers from taking commands from their juniors.

A senior officer who confirmed the development anonymously said:

“It is an established military tradition. Once your junior is appointed as a service chief, you automatically have to step aside. I’ve served for over 35 years, and I’m preparing for my retirement once replacements are confirmed.”

Reform Signals and the Future of Military Leadership

Analysts believe this reshuffle is part of President Tinubu’s broader strategy to revitalise military leadership, promote younger officers, and ensure loyalty and efficiency in Nigeria’s defence structure.

The forthcoming changes, Akahi News gathered, will not only alter the command structure but also redefine the leadership culture across the three services as new appointees settle into their roles.
