Morris Monye Apologises to Peter Obi, Obidient Movement Six Months After Resignation
Former Director of Mobilisation of the Obidient Movement, Morris Monye, has publicly apologised to Peter Obi and members of the movement six months after stepping down from his role. Akahi News learnt that the apology was shared in a statement posted on X on Thursday.
It is not a child’s play to walk back from a public fallout in politics. But when will admitting mistakes become part of Nigerian political culture? Monye says his resignation letter was written in frustration and does not reflect his true stance on Obi and the movement.

Why Monye Stepped Down in November 2025
Akahi News gathered that Monye resigned in November 2025, citing poor coordination within the Obidient Movement and what he described as underwhelming performance in the Anambra governorship election.
He disclosed that he personally funded nationwide mobilisation efforts during his time in office. These included travel, support for local structures, voter awareness campaigns and logistics. According to him, none of these expenses were covered by the movement’s leadership or by Peter Obi.
At the time, his resignation generated debate about internal organisation and funding within the grassroots movement that backed Obi’s 2023 presidential bid.
What the Apology Says
Akahi News learnt that Monye addressed his apology to the “Obidient family”, saying the resignation letter was written at a “moment of frustration and immaturity”.
“In that letter, I allowed deep frustration and personal emotions to cloud my judgment. I made statements that subtly and unnecessarily dragged Peter Obi, a man I still respect for his vision, integrity, and sacrifice for this nation. That was wrong. It was childish, and beneath the standard I should have upheld, especially as someone who once held a leadership position in this movement,” he wrote.
He added that he takes full responsibility for the letter, which he said was written and sent without external influence or editing. Although he later deleted it, Monye acknowledged that the damage to trust had already been done.
Direct Apology to Obi and Movement Members
Monye also tendered a personal apology to Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate. He said his words did not reflect the values of sacrifice, accountability and constructive criticism that Obi preaches.
“Sir, I am sincerely sorry. My words were not a true reflection of the values of sacrifice, accountability, and constructive criticism that you preach. I failed in that moment,” he stated.
To Obidient supporters, he said they are the real heroes of the movement and apologised for letting them down with public drama that exposed internal cracks. He stressed that the apology was not an attempt to seek favours or a position, but because it was the right thing to do.
Rebuilding Trust and Next Steps
Monye noted that leadership involves owning up when mistakes are made. He said he is committed to rebuilding trust through consistent actions rather than words alone, though he admitted that trust can only be earned back slowly, if at all.
The apology comes at a time when the Obidient Movement remains active ahead of the 2027 election cycle, with supporters still mobilising around Obi’s political vision.

Morris Monye’s apology closes one chapter of the Obidient Movement’s internal story, but whether it restores trust will depend on how both sides move forward. Public fallouts are common in Nigerian politics, but public accountability is less common.
