Mother Vows to Sue Cross River Government Over Son’s Death
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
A grieving mother in Cross River State has announced plans to take legal action against the state government over the death of her 22-year-old son, Moses Mba, who was reportedly shot by security operatives in Calabar.

According to The Guardian, the incident occurred on August 1 near the former residence of Governor Bassey Otu, when security personnel allegedly opened fire on Moses before assaulting him. He was later rushed to the Naval Reference Hospital, where doctors performed surgery to remove bullets from his body. Despite medical efforts, Moses succumbed to his injuries on August 9.
Mother Rejects Compensation, Demands Justice
Speaking with journalists in Calabar, the deceased’s mother, Mrs. Victoria Mba, accused the state government of silence and neglect, insisting that neither the police nor government officials had provided any official explanation weeks after the tragic incident.
“They think I will collect money and keep quiet, but I will not,” Mrs. Mba declared. “My son’s life cannot be bought. I want justice, and I want the truth of what happened to him to be made public.”
She revealed that attempts were made to offer the family monetary compensation, but they rejected it, demanding accountability and transparency over her son’s killing.
Burial Postponed Pending Investigation
The bereaved mother confirmed that the family has postponed the burial of Moses until a thorough investigation is carried out.
“I cannot bury my son while the people responsible go free. We will take legal action. This is the only way to ensure his death is not swept under the carpet,” she said.
Police, Government Yet to Comment
As of the time of filing this report, the Cross River State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the shooting, and no public inquiry has been announced by the state government.
Analysts told Akahi News that the case could spark wider debates over police accountability, human rights violations, and the use of lethal force in Nigeria.
The family insists they will not rest until justice is served and those responsible for Moses’s death are held accountable.
