NECO Releases 2025 SSCE External Results with Strong Performance Nationwide
The National Examinations Council has officially released the results of the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for external candidates, highlighting an impressive performance across the country. More than 80 per cent of candidates reportedly secured at least five credits, demonstrating strong academic achievement among private candidates.
The announcement was made on Tuesday in Minna, Niger State, by NECO Registrar and Chief Executive, Professor Dantani Wushishi, during a press briefing at the council’s headquarters. Akahi News gathered that Professor Wushishi encouraged candidates to access their results online via the NECO official website using their examination registration numbers.

Candidate Statistics and Participation
According to Akahi News, a total of 96,979 candidates registered for the examination across 16 subjects. The breakdown showed 51,823 males (53.43 per cent) and 45,156 females (46.56 per cent). Of this figure, 95,160 candidates eventually sat for the examinations.
Performance in core subjects was particularly strong. In English Language, 93,425 candidates participated, with 73,167 (78.32 per cent) achieving a credit or higher. Mathematics recorded even better outcomes, with 85,256 out of 93,330 candidates (91.35 per cent) scoring credit and above.
Overall, Akahi News reports that 68,166 candidates, representing 71.63 per cent, obtained five credits and above, including English and Mathematics. When excluding these two subjects, the number rose to 82,082 candidates, or 86.26 per cent.
Examination Malpractice Concerns
Despite the strong performance, Akahi News gathered that NECO raised concerns about malpractice during the 2025 SSCE External. Professor Wushishi revealed that 9,016 candidates were involved in various forms of examination misconduct, marking a 31.7 per cent increase compared to the 6,160 cases recorded in 2024.
As part of disciplinary measures, five supervisors from the Federal Capital Territory, Kano, Adamawa, and Ondo states have been recommended for blacklisting due to alleged involvement in malpractice. Additionally, four examination centres—two in Niger State and one each in Yobe and Kano—were recommended for de-recognition following instances of whole-centre examination irregularities.
Purpose of SSCE External Examination
The SSCE External is primarily designed for private candidates who either missed their internal school examinations or wish to improve previous results, providing an alternative pathway to academic certification. Akahi News notes that this initiative remains critical in ensuring access to academic credentials for students who may have faced educational disruptions.
Professor Wushishi urged candidates to verify their results promptly and cautioned against any attempt to falsify or manipulate scores.
The release of the 2025 SSCE External results underscores the continuing efforts of NECO to maintain high academic standards while addressing integrity challenges. Akahi News will continue to provide updates and insights on education developments nationwide.
