The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the official timetable for the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External, popularly known as NECO GCE, with candidates scheduled to begin their examinations on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
The examination will run until Saturday, November 21, 2026, giving candidates more than two weeks to sit their registered subjects. The timetable contains the dates, times and durations of the various papers to help candidates organise their preparations and avoid missing any examination.

NECO GCE 2026: Key Examination Dates
According to the released timetable, the 2026 NECO SSCE External examination will commence on November 4 and conclude on November 21.
Candidates are advised to obtain and study the complete timetable carefully, paying attention to the specific dates and times assigned to their registered subjects.
The examination is particularly important for candidates seeking to obtain or improve their O’Level results for admission into universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and other institutions.
Important Instructions for Candidates
NECO has outlined several instructions candidates must follow throughout the examination period.
1. Examination photocard is compulsory
Every candidate must have an examination photocard for identification. Candidates should ensure that their examination documents are ready before their scheduled papers.
2. Arrive at the examination centre early
Candidates are expected to be seated at least 30 minutes before the commencement of each paper. Early arrival will allow sufficient time for identification and other necessary examination procedures.
3. Follow the time stated on the question paper
Where the time indicated on a virtual question paper differs from the time stated on the timetable, candidates are instructed to adhere strictly to the time displayed on the virtual question paper.
4. Extra time for eligible candidates
Albino and blind candidates are to receive an additional 30 minutes across all papers, in line with the examination instructions.
5. Scientific calculators are permitted
Candidates may use scientific calculators where appropriate. However, they must ensure that their calculators comply with the examination regulations.
6. Electronic communication gadgets are prohibited
Mobile phones, iPads, tablets, smartwatches, smart glasses, smart pens and other prohibited electronic communication devices must not be taken into the examination hall. Candidates should familiarise themselves with the examination rules to avoid unnecessary complications.
Registration Deadline: Candidates Should Act Quickly
Candidates who have not completed their registration should consult NECO’s official website immediately.
NECO’s official portal indicates that normal registration for the 2026 SSCE External examination closes at midnight on October 26, 2026. Late registration is scheduled to run from October 27 to November 3, 2026, with an additional fee of ₦5,000.
Candidates are encouraged to confirm their registration status and follow the official registration guidelines rather than wait until the final days.
Candidates Urged to Intensify Preparations
With the examination scheduled to begin on November 4, candidates have limited time to revise their subjects, practise past questions and address areas where they experience difficulties.
Students should develop a revision timetable that gives adequate attention to every registered subject. They should also practise answering questions within the prescribed time to improve their speed, accuracy and confidence.
Parents, guardians and tutorial centres have important roles to play in supporting candidates during the final stage of preparation. Providing a conducive learning environment, encouraging regular revision and ensuring that candidates have the necessary examination materials can make a meaningful difference.
Candidates should also avoid relying on unverified examination questions or claims about leaked papers. Consistent preparation and adherence to official examination guidelines remain the best approach.
Where to Obtain the Official NECO Timetable
Candidates can access the official 2026 SSCE External examination timetable and registration guidelines through the National Examinations Council’s website:
Official NECO website: https://neco.gov.ng/
Candidates should download the timetable and verify their individual subject schedules before each examination.
The release of the 2026 NECO SSCE External timetable gives candidates a clear schedule for their November examinations. With the first papers set for November 4 and the examination ending on November 21, candidates should use the remaining preparation period wisely.
Careful planning, regular revision, punctuality and compliance with examination regulations will be essential for candidates hoping to achieve strong results.
