The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the reviewed registration guidelines for the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External, outlining registration procedures, fees, examination dates and requirements for prospective candidates.
According to the guidelines, the examination will adopt a dual-mode format comprising Hybrid Computer-Based Examination (CBE) and Pen-and-Paper Examination (PPE) in 16 selected subjects.
Registration commenced on July 7, 2026, and the normal registration period is scheduled to close at midnight on Monday, October 26, 2026. Candidates who fail to register within the stipulated period will have an additional opportunity during the late registration window, which runs from October 27 to November 3, 2026, at an extra cost of ₦5,000.

NECO 2026 SSCE External Registration Fee
The registration fee is ₦30,000 per candidate, inclusive of a four-figure mathematical table and a waterproof certificate jacket or folder. However, stamp duty, service and Remita charges also apply.
The Council stated that the registration fee is non-refundable once payment has been made. Candidates who opt for walk-in registration will pay ₦43,000 per candidate.
Registration can be initiated through the official NECO SSCE External portal at https://ssceexternal.neco.gov.ng/. Candidates are required to create and activate an account using an email address or phone number, purchase a registration quota, provide their biodata and complete the registration process at a reputable cybercafé for biometric capture.
A valid National Identification Number (NIN) is compulsory. Candidates must also provide a passport photograph taken within the preceding six months, with a white background.
Examination Dates and Available Subjects
NECO has scheduled the 2026 SSCE External examination to hold from Wednesday, November 4, to Saturday, November 21, 2026.
The 16 available subjects are Accounting, Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Christian Religious Studies, Civic Education, Commerce, Economics, English Language, General Mathematics, Geography, Government, Islamic Studies, Literature-in-English, Marketing and Physics.
Candidates are advised to select their subjects carefully and confirm that their chosen combination meets their academic and admission requirements.
Biometric Verification and Registration Requirements
The guidelines require biometric fingerprints to be captured during offline registration. Candidates will also undergo biometric verification during the examination.
NECO warned that discrepancies between candidates’ passport photographs and fingerprints could result in sanctions under the applicable laws. Candidates should therefore ensure that their registration details and biometric information are accurate.
Upon completing registration, each candidate must obtain an examination timetable and at least one clear copy of the NECO photocard. The photocard must contain a clear photograph and be properly endorsed in the referee’s attestation section by an authorised person.
Approved referees include the principal of a recognised secondary school, an ordained clergyman or chief imam, a commissioned military or police officer not below the rank of captain or its equivalent, a senior civil servant not below Grade Level 14, or a legal practitioner with at least 10 years of experience.
Candidates are no longer required to submit their attestation or photocards to NECO state offices for stamping.
Examination Centres and Special Needs
Examination centres will be organised into neighbourhoods within each state. Candidates must select a neighbourhood in the state where they intend to sit for the examination.
NECO advised candidates to reprint their photocards no later than two weeks before the examination to confirm their assigned centres. The selected examination neighbourhood cannot be edited after the information has been uploaded.
Candidates with special needs are required to register like other candidates but must correctly indicate the nature of their needs when entering their biodata.
The Council also stated that a mock examination may be organised for interested candidates, with details to be communicated before the main examination.
NECO Warns Against Registration Errors and Multiple Registration
NECO has advised candidates and cybercafé operators to follow the official registration instructions carefully. Candidates are expected to cross-check all information entered on their behalf before their records are uploaded, as the Council will not be responsible for registration errors committed by cybercafés.
Candidates are entitled to a one-time correction before the examination begins. However, a complete change of name will not be permitted, and only one of the following may be corrected: a name component or the passport photograph, alongside other eligible registration data.
The Council further warned that multiple registration is prohibited. Candidates who register more than once risk having their entire results cancelled.
Electronic communication gadgets, including mobile phones, tablets, smartwatches and other prohibited devices, are not allowed inside examination centres. Candidates must also arrive at least 30 minutes before the commencement of each subject or paper, as late entry will not be permitted once an examination has started.
Advice to Prospective Candidates
With the normal registration deadline approaching, prospective candidates are encouraged to complete their registration early, verify their personal information and retain the necessary examination documents.
Candidates should consult the official NECO website for the complete reviewed guidelines and examination timetable before proceeding with registration.
The 2026 SSCE External examination provides an opportunity for eligible candidates to obtain the Senior School Certificate through the external examination route. Careful preparation, accurate registration and strict compliance with NECO’s rules will be essential for a smooth examination experience.
