New Football Team Launched in Olachor Okpoma Ward to Boost Grassroots Sports and Youth Development

A vibrant new chapter in grassroots sports development has begun in Olachor Okpoma Ward, Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, with the official unveiling of a newly established football team. The launch ceremony, held amidst great enthusiasm, brought together community leaders, youth stakeholders, and sports advocates who celebrated the initiative as a timely intervention to engage and empower young people through structured sporting activities.

The historic event was marked by the generous donation of complete sports kits—including jerseys, boots, and training gear—by Mr. Egbudu Mathew, Chairman and Group Managing Director of MAPSI Group. His contribution is expected to significantly enhance the team’s preparedness for training and future competitions.
Speaking at the unveiling, Mr. Egbudu Mathew emphasized the importance of youth development, urging the players to remain disciplined and focused as they pursue their dreams. He commended the local leadership for fostering initiatives that offer meaningful opportunities to young people.
In further support of the initiative, Hon. Aleje Emmanuel, Councillor representing O’OH Ward, pledged an additional set of jerseys for the team. He lauded the collaborative effort, expressing hope that the team would become a beacon of unity and inspiration in the region.
Comrade Abraham Okai, Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Yala Chapter, also addressed attendees, describing sports as a critical tool for community development and youth engagement. He noted that such initiatives are key to keeping young people positively involved and off social vices.
The newly appointed head coach, Mr. Daniel Ikpe, expressed gratitude to all sponsors and supporters, promising to build a disciplined and competitive squad that would bring pride to Olachor Okpoma and the entire Yala LGA.
Also speaking, the Supervisory Councillor for Social Welfare in Yala Council, Mr. Augustine Adula, described the event as a symbol of what is achievable when communities unite with a shared vision for youth empowerment. “This effort is not just about football,” he stated. “It is about building hope, unity, and a brighter future through sports.”
