Nigerian Army Trains Senior Officers on Leadership to Strengthen Military Effectiveness

The Nigerian Army has intensified efforts to strengthen leadership capacity, professionalism and operational effectiveness among its personnel through specialised training programmes aimed at preparing officers for the demands of Nigeria’s evolving security environment.

The initiative reflects the military’s recognition that effective leadership, sound judgement and professional competence are essential to addressing security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of criminality.

Leadership Training Takes Centre Stage in Army Reforms

Leadership development remains an important component of the Nigerian Army’s efforts to build a professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force.

In February 2026, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, inaugurated Course 10/2026 at the Army War College Nigeria, with the programme designed to prepare senior officers for operational-level responsibilities.

The course brought together officers from the Nigerian Army and other military services, alongside participants from several African countries.

Speaking at the inauguration, Shaibu emphasised the importance of rigorous training, strategic thinking and the acquisition of relevant military skills in improving the performance of personnel.

The Army War College Nigeria provides specialised education intended to bridge the gap between tactical operations and strategic decision-making, equipping participants to handle complex security responsibilities.

Tackling Nigeria’s Evolving Security Challenges

Nigeria continues to face multiple security threats requiring coordinated responses from the military and other security agencies.

These challenges include insurgency, terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and organised criminal activities across different parts of the country.

Addressing such threats requires more than personnel and equipment. Commanders must also demonstrate sound judgement, strategic foresight, effective communication and the ability to make decisions under pressure.

Leadership training can help military personnel improve their understanding of operational planning, personnel management and inter-agency cooperation.

It can also strengthen accountability and encourage commanders to uphold professional standards while carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

Why Professionalism and Discipline Matter

Military effectiveness depends not only on operational capacity but also on the conduct of personnel and the quality of leadership within the command structure.

Senior officers are responsible for setting standards, supervising subordinates and ensuring that military operations are conducted professionally.

Effective leadership also involves promoting discipline, respecting applicable rules of engagement and protecting civilians during security operations.

These responsibilities are particularly important in areas affected by prolonged conflict, where the relationship between security agencies and local communities can influence public confidence and cooperation.

Training programmes that combine operational competence with ethical leadership can therefore contribute to institutional credibility and improved civil-military relations.

Sustaining the Impact of Military Training

Although specialised training is important, its effectiveness ultimately depends on how successfully participants apply the knowledge and skills acquired to their daily responsibilities.

The Nigerian Army will need to sustain professional development, strengthen mentorship and ensure that lessons from training programmes translate into measurable improvements in operational planning and personnel management.

Regular evaluation can also help determine whether leadership courses are improving decision-making, discipline and coordination in the field.

In addition, collaboration among the Army, Navy, Air Force and other relevant security institutions remains essential where security threats require joint operations.

The Nigerian Army’s emphasis on leadership training reflects the importance of developing competent officers capable of responding to increasingly complex security challenges.

While military equipment and manpower remain important, effective leadership, discipline, strategic thinking and professional conduct are equally essential to achieving operational objectives.

Sustained investment in training, accountability and institutional development will be critical to strengthening the Army’s capacity to protect lives, defend the country’s territorial integrity and fulfil its constitutional responsibilities.
