The legal proceedings involving the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, took a new turn on Monday as he opted out of his earlier plan to call witnesses in his ongoing terrorism trial.

According to details gathered by Akahi News, Kanu made this decision after reviewing his case file and concluding that there was no valid charge against him under Nigerian law. The development occurred at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where the IPOB leader addressed the presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho.
Kanu’s Bold Declaration in Court
During Monday’s proceedings, Nnamdi Kanu reportedly told the court that he would not proceed with any defence, insisting that no legal basis exists for the charges levelled against him.
“Join me in praising God. I have gone through my case file, and there is no charge against me,” Kanu declared.
He further argued that there was “no extant law in Nigeria upon which the prosecution can predicate the charges against me,” urging the court to release him or grant bail immediately.
Judge’s Advisory and Adjournment
Akahi News learnt that Justice Omotosho advised Kanu to seek legal counsel before finalising his decision, cautioning him about the potential implications of waiving his defence. The judge subsequently directed him to file a written address detailing his stance and serve the prosecution accordingly.
The case, which had earlier been fixed for Kanu to open his defence on October 27, has now been adjourned to November 4, 5, and 6. During those dates, the court is expected to adopt the final written addresses from both parties.
What This Means for Kanu’s Case
Legal observers who spoke to Akahi News noted that Kanu’s latest position may either expedite his release or complicate the case, depending on how the court interprets his refusal to defend the charges. The development has generated renewed discussions about the legal and political implications of his trial, particularly regarding the federal government’s handling of IPOB-related issues.
As Nigerians await the next hearing, many continue to watch closely to see whether the court will uphold Kanu’s claim that the prosecution has failed to establish any case requiring his defence.
