Northern Youths Merger Group Rebukes Kwankwaso Over Security Comments

The Northern Youths Merger Group (NYMG), a pro–All Progressives Congress (APC) coalition, has publicly distanced itself from recent remarks made by former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, criticizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s handling of Nigeria’s security challenges.

In a statement issued from Kano and signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Hon. Musa Mujahid Zaitawa, NYMG described Kwankwaso’s comments as “baseless” and “unhelpful”, asserting that they follow a pattern of opposing successive governments without offering constructive alternatives.

The statement highlighted that Kwankwaso, having served as Minister of Defence, Governor, and Senator, should be well aware of the complexities inherent in managing national security.

“The President is actively engaging security agencies and implementing reforms aimed at restoring peace across the country. Statements that undermine these efforts do not contribute to national stability,” Zaitawa said, according to Akahi News.

NYMG further noted that Kwankwaso has consistently criticised previous administrations, including that of former President Goodluck Jonathan, and continues to adopt an oppositional stance against the APC-led federal government.

Declining Support for Kwankwasiyya Movement

The group also pointed out that support for Kwankwaso’s movement has reportedly declined, citing the exit of several former allies, including serving lawmakers and prominent political figures, as evidence of waning influence.

In a sharper critique, NYMG alleged that Kwankwaso is politicising security concerns in Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections, allegedly attempting to implicate former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin to portray the Tinubu administration as ineffective.

Call for Restraint and National Unity

NYMG warned against public statements that could inflame tensions or incite unrest among youths, urging all political leaders to exercise responsibility and restraint in their engagements.

Despite the criticisms, the group commended President Tinubu for measures aimed at addressing insecurity, including recent changes in the nation’s defence leadership and initiatives designed to support farmers and improve livelihoods across northern Nigeria.

“Political actors must prioritise national unity and collective security over partisan interests. The fight against insecurity requires cooperation from all stakeholders,” Zaitawa concluded.

Akahi News gathered that the statement reinforces the group’s support for the Tinubu administration while signalling an insistence on constructive dialogue over political point-scoring.
