NURTW Member Shot Dead at Lagos Bus Stop, Police Begin Investigation

A member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), identified as Kamoru Omokoye, has been shot dead at a bus stop in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.

Omokoye was reportedly attacked at about 9am on Sunday at Abijo Bus Stop, where two men suspected to be cultists allegedly arrived in an unregistered Lexus RX 350 and opened fire on him.

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the incident and said an investigation has commenced.

The Command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said the police had begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing.

Following the attack, detectives reportedly visited the scene and combed the area as part of efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The circumstances of the attack have raised concerns about the safety of residents and commuters around Abijo and other busy transport locations in the Ibeju-Lekki axis.

A separate account by an anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, alleged that Omokoye, who was also known by the nickname “Zobo”, was sitting at a spot where local gin, popularly known as ogogoro, was being sold when the attackers arrived.

The platform further alleged that several other people at the location sustained gunshot injuries during the attack.

PUNCH reported that about three people were said to have sustained gunshot injuries, although further official details concerning their identities and medical conditions were not immediately available.

The reported attack is particularly disturbing because it occurred in a public location during the morning, when people would ordinarily be expected to go about their daily activities.

The use of firearms in such an environment creates risks beyond the intended victim, as bullets fired in crowded areas can injure or kill innocent bystanders.

The incident therefore underscores the continuing challenge posed by cult-related violence and the availability of firearms in parts of Lagos.

However, the description of the attackers as cultists remains an allegation at this stage. The police investigation will be required to establish the identities and motives of the assailants and determine whether the attack was indeed connected to cult activity or another dispute.

The use of an unregistered vehicle also provides investigators with a potentially important line of inquiry. Establishing the vehicle’s ownership, movements and occupants could assist the police in tracing the suspects.

For investigators, obtaining credible information from eyewitnesses and residents around Abijo Bus Stop could also prove crucial, particularly if anyone saw the vehicle before or after the shooting.

The police will also need to examine available surveillance footage from businesses and other facilities around the area, where such footage exists.

Beyond identifying the perpetrators, the motive for the killing remains an important question.

Whether the attack was related to a personal dispute, transport-related disagreement, cult rivalry or another criminal motive should be established through evidence rather than speculation.

The reported death of Omokoye also leaves behind a family that must deal with the consequences of a sudden and violent loss. According to the account cited by PUNCH, he was said to have had an eight-month-old child.

The reported injuries suffered by other people at the scene further demonstrate the wider human consequences of the attack.

While the police have commenced investigation, residents of the area also have an important role to play by providing credible information that could assist investigators.

At the same time, witnesses and members of the public should avoid taking the law into their own hands or circulating unverified claims that could complicate the investigation or endanger innocent people.

The authorities should work to ensure that those responsible for the shooting are identified, arrested and brought before the appropriate court.

The incident also reinforces the need for stronger efforts to prevent cult-related violence, improve intelligence gathering and restrict the movement and use of illegal firearms in communities.

For residents and commuters in the Ibeju-Lekki axis, the priority now is not only justice for the deceased but also reassurance that public spaces such as bus stops can remain safe for ordinary residents.

Until the police conclude their investigation, the motive behind the killing and the identities of those responsible should remain matters for law enforcement to establish through evidence.
