OAU Mourns as 18-Year-Old Medical Student Dies in His Sleep
The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden death of an 18-year-old medical student of the institution, who reportedly died while sleeping in his hostel.

The deceased, identified as Timilehin Adetoye Toromade, was a Part Three student of the College of Health Sciences, Department of Medicine and Surgery. His untimely death has sent shockwaves across the university community, particularly among students and staff who described the incident as devastating and difficult to comprehend.
University Confirms Incident With Deep Sorrow
In an official statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution confirmed that Timilehin, with matriculation number CLI/2022/133, passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
According to the statement, the university received the news “with shock and deep sorrow,” noting that the loss has left the academic community grieving. Akahi News gathered that preliminary information suggests the student may have died shortly after 2 a.m.
“One of his roommates reportedly said the deceased opened the door for another student around that time,” the statement disclosed, adding that he was later found unresponsive.
Vice-Chancellor Describes Loss as Painful and Tragic
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Visitor, the University Council, Management, Senate, staff, and students.
Describing the incident as a painful loss, Professor Bamire said the death of such a young student with a promising future was a tragedy beyond words.
“The loss of a young life filled with promise, purpose, and potential is a tragedy that words alone cannot adequately capture,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.
He further noted that the deceased had embraced the rigours of medical training with the noble aim of serving humanity, adding that his passing has left a deep void among his peers and all who knew him within the university.
Investigations Ongoing as Community Grieves
The university management disclosed that it is working closely with relevant authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the incident, in line with established medical and administrative procedures.
Akahi News learnt that while no foul play has been officially confirmed, appropriate steps are being taken to ensure clarity and transparency in handling the matter. The institution stressed that due process would be followed to ascertain the cause of death.
