Oba of Benin Sanctions Palace Queen, Chiefs Over Influencer Peller’s Unauthorised Visit

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has approved sanctions against a palace queen, some chiefs, and other staff members following the unauthorised access granted to social media influencer, Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, popularly known as Peller, into the Benin Palace.

A regal figure dressed in elaborate traditional attire, adorned with beads and jewelry, seated with a dignified expression. Surrounding him are several individuals in traditional clothing, some looking on attentively.

The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) disclosed this in a statement issued by its secretary, Frank Irabor, describing the incident as a serious breach of palace protocol and a desecration of its sacred environment.

Akahi News gathered that the incident occurred on March 6, 2026, and has since sparked widespread reactions about respect for traditional institutions in the digital age.

Palace Authorities Condemn Breach of Sacred Protocols

According to the council, Mr Adelaja and his entourage gained entry into the palace without the necessary approval, an act considered highly inappropriate given the spiritual and cultural significance of the palace.

“The Palace is not a public thoroughfare or a location for frivolous content creation; it is the ancient and spiritual seat of the Oba of Benin, governed by centuries of tradition, custom, and sacred protocols,” the statement emphasised.

Akahi News learnt that the council views the incident as not merely a procedural lapse but a fundamental violation of long-standing customs that define the identity and authority of the Benin Kingdom.

This raises a profound question in modern society: in an era driven by social media visibility, where should the line be drawn between content creation and cultural reverence?

Arrest, Suspension, and Disciplinary Actions

In response to the incident, a palace staff member identified as Mr Omuemu has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and is expected to be charged in court for allegedly causing a breach of the peace and facilitating the unauthorised entry.

A chief implicated in the matter has also been suspended indefinitely from palace duties.

Furthermore, the palace queen involved in the incident is currently undergoing serious disciplinary proceedings in accordance with Benin customs and traditions.

The council indicated that the outcome of the process could lead to her removal from the palace.

Akahi News gathered that these actions reflect the palace’s determination to uphold discipline and preserve the sanctity of its institution, regardless of the individuals involved.

But this development prompts deeper reflection: should tradition remain rigid in the face of changing times, or must it evolve to accommodate new realities?

Council Summons Influencer, Demands Apology

Following the controversy, the Benin Traditional Council extended an invitation to Peller to appear before a committee of chiefs investigating the matter.

However, he reportedly failed to honour the invitation.

The council noted that his unapproved visit caused “significant embarrassment” and distress to those within the palace system.

As a result, he has been directed to tender an unreserved written apology for the unauthorised access and the consequences that followed.

The council warned that failure to comply with this directive would leave it with no option but to pursue legal action.

Tradition Meets the Digital Age

The incident has ignited conversations about the intersection between Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and the rapidly evolving world of digital media.

While influencers command vast audiences and shape public narratives, traditional institutions remain custodians of history, spirituality, and identity.

Akahi News learnt that many observers see this episode as a defining moment that highlights the tension between modern expression and ancient authority.

Can sacred institutions maintain their relevance without compromising their values? Or does opening their doors to modern platforms risk diluting their essence?

At what point does visibility become intrusion?

These questions linger as society continues to navigate the delicate balance between innovation and tradition.

A Test of Authority and Accountability

Ultimately, the sanctions imposed by the Oba of Benin underscore a broader message: that no individual or trend is above established cultural authority.

The palace’s firm response signals its commitment to preserving its heritage, even in the face of contemporary pressures.

For many, this incident serves as a reminder that while times may change, certain institutions remain anchored in principles that transcend generations.

As Nigeria continues to evolve socially and technologically, the challenge remains—how can respect for tradition coexist with the demands of a modern, digital society?
