Indian authorities have arrested seven foreign nationals, including six Ukrainians and one American, over alleged involvement in a terror plot linked to cross-border activities and the supply of drones to armed groups.
The arrests followed a coordinated operation carried out by multiple teams of India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Akahi News gathered that the development has raised fresh concerns about transnational security threats, particularly the growing use of advanced technology in unconventional warfare.
Coordinated Arrests Across Major Airports
The suspects were apprehended at different entry points across India. A United States national was arrested at Kolkata airport, while three Ukrainian nationals were each detained at airports in Lucknow and Delhi by officials of the Bureau of Immigration.
Authorities disclosed that although the individuals entered India with valid visas, they allegedly violated immigration protocols by travelling into Mizoram without obtaining the mandatory Restricted Area Permit.
Akahi News learnt that their movements did not end within Indian borders, as investigations revealed that the group crossed into neighbouring Myanmar.
From there, they reportedly made contact with ethnic armed groups considered hostile to India’s national security interests.
Alleged Drone Smuggling and Links to Armed Groups
Preliminary findings suggest that the suspects were involved in transporting consignments of drones from Europe into Myanmar through Indian territory.
Security agencies believe these drones were intended for use by armed groups operating in the region.
Further investigations indicate that these groups may have been providing support to banned insurgent outfits within India, including the supply of weapons, training, and other operational equipment.
This raises a critical question for global security observers: how has modern warfare evolved to the point where relatively accessible technology like drones can redefine the scale and reach of non-state actors?
Court Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
Following their arrest, the suspects were transferred to Delhi, where they were presented before a duty magistrate.
Initially remanded in custody for three days, a court later extended their detention until March 27, granting investigators additional time to deepen their inquiry.
In his ruling, Additional Sessions Judge Prashant Sharma emphasised the need for extended custody, citing the complexity of the case.
He noted that critical aspects of the investigation include the collection of evidence, uncovering the full scope of the alleged conspiracy, identifying possible accomplices, and analysing digital data retrieved from the suspects.
