The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has entered a new chapter of leadership following the formal assumption of duty by Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Sunday Kelvin Aneke as the 23rd Chief of the Air Staff (CAS). The historic transition, which took place on 30 October 2025, signifies a pivotal moment in the Force’s evolution and commitment to safeguarding the nation’s airspace.

In his inaugural address, AVM Aneke described his appointment as “a tremendous privilege and a solemn duty,” vowing to lead the NAF with humility, integrity, and unwavering dedication to national security.

According to Akahi News, the new Air Chief expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the trust and confidence reposed in him, assuring that the Force under his command would remain loyal to the President, the Constitution, and the Nigerian people.

Tribute to Outgoing Chief Hasan Abubakar

In a deeply reflective segment of the handover ceremony, AVM Aneke paid glowing tribute to his predecessor, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, for his “exceptional leadership, professionalism, and courage” in navigating the NAF through one of its most challenging operational periods.

Akahi News learnt that Abubakar’s tenure was marked by enhanced operational efficiency, significant advancements in personnel welfare, and Nigeria’s emergence as Chair of the Association of African Air Forces.

He further praised Abubakar’s legacy of service and excellence, pledging to consolidate the achievements of the outgoing Chief and sustain the Force’s momentum in combating terrorism and safeguarding national unity.

Abubakar’s Farewell: A Reflection on Service and Sacrifice

In his valedictory speech, Air Marshal Abubakar expressed profound gratitude to God and the nation for the opportunity to serve. He highlighted key milestones achieved during his administration, including modernised fleet management, expanded air operations, and improved training initiatives aimed at bolstering the NAF’s strategic capabilities.

He also commended officers and men of the Force for their dedication and patriotism, while honouring the memory of fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price for peace and security.

“AVM Aneke is an officer of proven integrity and discipline,” Abubakar noted, urging his successor to prioritise personnel welfare, deepen inter-agency collaboration, and maintain the combat-readiness of the Air Force.

Aneke Outlines Vision for the Future

In his acceptance speech, AVM Aneke reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening inter-service synergy, enhancing force readiness, and driving innovation across the Force.

He stated that his leadership would focus on “delivering the security architecture vital to Nigeria’s peace, progress, and transformation,” stressing that the NAF must remain “Willing, Able, and Ready” to defend the nation’s territorial integrity.

According to Akahi News, Aneke also expressed appreciation to the Tenth National Assembly, colleagues across the Armed Forces, and his family for their support, assuring that his tenure would build upon existing foundations to deliver measurable outcomes for Nigeria’s air defence strategy.
