Ogbomoso Group Intensifies Campaign for New Oyo State, Proposes Ogbomoso as Capital

A coalition of like-minded individuals in Ogbomoso has intensified efforts to advance the campaign for the creation of a new Oyo State, with Ogbomoso proposed as its capital. The push aligns with a bill currently under consideration by the National Assembly, which seeks to create additional states in Nigeria. 

The group, which has garnered the full support of community leaders and stakeholders, has established committees to engage with key stakeholders across the region and secure the necessary approvals from the National Assembly. The proposed state, tentatively named *New Oyo State*, would comprise four administrative zones: Ogbomoso, Oyo, Oke-Ogun I, and Oke-Ogun II. 

Ogbomoso, the proposed capital, is strategically chosen for its status as the second-largest city in the current Oyo State, after Ibadan. Known for its cultural diversity, economic viability, and significant population, Ogbomoso is seen as a fitting administrative hub for the new state. The proposed state would include 19 local government areas, meeting and exceeding the minimum requirements for state viability. 

The recommended local governments are: Afijio, Atiba, Atisbo, Ogo-Oluwa, Irepo, Iseyin, Itesiwaju, Iwajowa, Kajola, Ori Ire, Olorunsogo, Orelope, Oyo East, Oyo West, Saki East, Saki West, Surulere, Ogbomoso North, and Ogbomoso South. 

In a recent meeting attended by prominent community leaders and stakeholders, the group outlined its vision and strategies for achieving the creation of the new state. Attendees included retired General Oladayo Popoola; Dr. Saka Balogun; Mr. Abu Salami; Alhaji Lamidi Monsuru Ayoade Ejide; Professor Segun Ajiboye; Dr. Akin Oladeji-Johnbrown; Mrs. Ruth Olasoko Adeyinka; Rear Admiral Jacob Ajani (rtd); Professor John Aderinto; Professor Jide Ajao; Mr. Kola Oyadiran; Chief Olaleye Pekun Armstrong; Professor Rasheed Olaniyi; and Pa Amos Ajekigbe. 

Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Saka Balogun emphasized the economic and administrative benefits of the proposed state. “The creation of New Oyo State will bring governance closer to the people, foster development, and unlock the economic potential of the region. Ogbomoso, as the capital, is well-positioned to drive this vision,” he said. 

The group’s proposal has sparked widespread discussion among residents and stakeholders, with many expressing optimism about the potential for increased infrastructure development, job creation, and improved access to government services. 

As the National Assembly continues deliberations on the bill for state creation, the Ogbomoso group remains committed to rallying support and ensuring their proposal receives the necessary backing. The campaign represents a significant step in the long-standing quest for regional development and administrative restructuring in Nigeria.
