Ogun By-Election: INEC Officials, Politician Arrested Over Alleged Vote-Buying Plot
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
Security operatives in Ogun State have arrested two individuals suspected to be officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) alongside a politician allegedly involved in a vote-buying scheme ahead of Saturday’s by-election in the state.

The arrests, which took place at a hotel in Iperu-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area, followed intelligence reports that linked the officials to a large sum of money purportedly handed over to them by political party figures for distribution to voters.
Viral Video Sparks Public Reactions
A video circulating widely on social media shows the suspected INEC officials—one male and one female—alongside alleged party officers, believed to be from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In the footage, the individuals are seen squatting as they are interrogated by an unidentified security operative.
During the questioning, the officer stated that intelligence suggested the officials had earlier been contacted and offered cash inducements by party representatives to influence the outcome of the by-election. The footage has since triggered heated public debates, with many Nigerians expressing outrage over the recurring challenge of electoral malpractice.
Ongoing Investigation
Although the identities of the arrested suspects have not been officially confirmed at press time, reports suggest that they were immediately taken into custody for further interrogation. Security sources hinted that the investigation is being handled discreetly to establish the extent of the alleged conspiracy.
The Ogun State Police Command is yet to issue a formal statement on the matter, but insiders confirmed that the suspects are currently being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for more comprehensive questioning.
Concerns Over Electoral Integrity
The incident comes as the Remo Federal Constituency prepares to head to the polls in a crucial by-election. Civil society groups and election monitors have raised concerns that such alleged vote-buying schemes undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
Analysts argue that the arrests highlight persistent loopholes in Nigeria’s democratic system, particularly regarding the neutrality of election officials and the conduct of political parties. They warn that if not addressed transparently, the development could cast a shadow over the credibility of the by-election.
Looking Ahead
As investigations continue, stakeholders are calling on INEC and security agencies to ensure accountability and transparency in handling the case. The outcome, they argue, will serve as a litmus test for Nigeria’s readiness to uphold free and fair elections.
For now, all eyes remain on Ogun State as citizens await the official outcome of the by-election and the fate of the arrested suspects.
