Ofatedo Mourns as Monarch Joins His Ancestors
The ancient town of Ofatedo in Egbedore Local Government Area of Osun State has been thrown into mourning following the death of its traditional ruler, the Olofa of Ofatedo, Oba Abdulahi Okunloye Agunloye, who has joined his ancestors after over four decades on the throne.

Information reaching Akahi News revealed that the revered monarch, who ascended the throne in 1981, passed on at a remarkable age, bringing to an end a reign marked by peace, progress, and dedication to the development of Ofatedo and its people.
A Reign Spanning 44 Eventful Years
Born into the royal family of Ofatedo, Oba Abdulahi Okunloye Agunloye was crowned Olofa of Ofatedo in 1981 and ruled for 44 years, becoming one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Osun State.
Throughout his reign, the monarch was known for his commitment to unity, cultural preservation, and the socio-economic advancement of his community. Elders in the town recall how his leadership ushered in an era of relative peace and gradual modernisation while maintaining the cultural heritage of the Ofatedo people.
“Oba Okunloye was not only a custodian of tradition but also a bridge between the old and new generations,” a community leader told Akahi News, describing the late king as a father figure who prioritised education, youth development, and communal harmony.
Burial Arrangements Yet to Be Announced
At the time of filing this report, details of the burial arrangements were still sketchy. However, it is expected that the palace chiefs and family members will soon release an official statement outlining the funeral rites in line with the customs and traditions of the Ofatedo kingdom.
Sources within the community hinted that the burial ceremony will likely draw dignitaries, traditional rulers, and government officials from across Osun State and beyond, given the late monarch’s towering status and decades of service.
Tributes Pour In for the Late Monarch
Already, tributes have begun pouring in from indigenes and well-wishers. Many have taken to social media platforms and community forums to express their grief and celebrate the life and legacy of Oba Okunloye Agunloye.
An Ofatedo youth leader described the king as “a man of peace whose wisdom guided the community through difficult times.” Another resident noted that “his reign witnessed the growth of Ofatedo from a modest settlement into a thriving community with improved infrastructure and educational opportunities.”
End of an Era, Beginning of Another
With the passing of the Olofa of Ofatedo, attention will now turn to the traditional selection process for a new king. Palace sources told Akahi News that the succession will strictly follow the community’s customs to ensure a smooth transition of leadership.
For now, however, the people of Ofatedo remain united in grief as they mourn a monarch who dedicated his life to service, cultural preservation, and the wellbeing of his people.
