One Dead, Several Injured as Bus Somersaults, Catches Fire in Kwara
One person has been confirmed dead after a commercial bus carrying 21 passengers crashed, somersaulted and caught fire along the Oko-Olowo highway in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The fatal accident occurred on Sunday at Iye-Maja Junction, with the Kwara State Fire Service reporting that emergency responders were alerted to the incident at about 6:35pm.

The bus, identified by its registration number as DTH840SA, reportedly developed a tyre fault while in motion. The incident caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle before it somersaulted and subsequently caught fire.
Firefighters who arrived at the scene commenced rescue operations and evacuated passengers from the burning vehicle.
Several passengers sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital for medical attention. One passenger, however, was confirmed dead.
The incident has once again highlighted the serious consequences that can arise from mechanical failures on Nigerian highways, particularly when vehicles carrying large numbers of passengers are not adequately maintained.
The Kwara State Fire Service urged motorists, especially commercial vehicle operators, to ensure that their vehicles are properly maintained and roadworthy before embarking on journeys.
The agency stressed the importance of regular inspection of tyres, braking systems, electrical components and other critical parts of vehicles.
Such checks, it noted, can help identify mechanical faults early and potentially prevent avoidable road crashes.
The Chief Fire Officer, Alabi Muhammed, also urged motorists to exercise greater caution on highways and promptly report emergencies to the appropriate response agencies.
The Kwara crash comes as another reminder that road safety cannot depend solely on the response of emergency agencies after accidents have occurred. Preventive maintenance, responsible driving and effective enforcement of roadworthiness standards remain essential to reducing avoidable deaths on Nigerian roads.
While emergency responders were able to evacuate the passengers from the burning vehicle, the loss of one life demonstrates the potentially devastating consequences of a seemingly sudden mechanical failure.
Authorities and transport operators therefore face the continuing responsibility of ensuring that commercial vehicles are subjected to appropriate safety checks before being allowed to carry passengers on long or busy routes.
For passengers, the incident also underscores the importance of choosing vehicles operated by responsible transport companies and of remaining vigilant about basic safety conditions when travelling by road.
The deceased passenger’s family has been left to mourn their loss, while those who survived the crash are receiving medical attention.

The circumstances surrounding the crash further reinforce the need for motorists to treat tyre condition and other critical vehicle components as matters of life and death rather than routine maintenance issues.
