Osogbo Catholic Altar Servers Admit New Members After Rigorous Training in Ile-Ife
The spirit of service and discipline was on full display at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Pro-Cathedral Church, Lagere, Ile-Ife, as the Catholic Altar Servers Association of Nigeria (CASAN) admitted a new set of young members following weeks of intensive formation and screening.
Akahi News gathered that the solemn admission ceremony took place during the second Mass on Sunday, 26th April 2026, drawing the attention of parishioners, families, and church leaders who witnessed the formal induction of the young servers into sacred service.

A Sacred Call to Service
In what observers described as both spiritually uplifting and deeply symbolic, about 18 young persons who successfully completed the rigorous training programme were presented before the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Peter Adeyemi, for the initiation rites.
The candidates, dressed in their liturgical attire, stood reverently before the altar as they were formally welcomed into the noble ministry of altar service—an essential arm of Catholic worship that supports the priest during Mass and other liturgical celebrations.
According to Akahi News, the ceremony was marked by prayers, blessings, and words of exhortation, reminding the new servers of the responsibility placed upon them to uphold discipline, humility, and devotion in their service to God and the Church.
Discipline and Moral Excellence as Hallmark
Sources within the Osogbo Catholic Diocese told Akahi News that altar servers at the Lagere pro-cathedral are widely regarded as one of the most disciplined groups within the diocese.
Their training, which spans several weeks or months, is said to go beyond learning liturgical duties. It also focuses heavily on moral formation, spiritual growth, and character development.
“Altar serving is not just about assisting at Mass; it is about forming young minds to live a life of service, discipline, and reverence,” a church source explained.
Akahi News learnt that the formation process instils values such as obedience, punctuality, teamwork, and respect—qualities expected of anyone privileged to serve at the altar.
Rigorous Training and Screening Process
The journey to becoming an altar server in the pro-cathedral is far from easy. Candidates are subjected to a structured programme that includes:
- Liturgical training and understanding of Mass procedures
- Spiritual formation and prayer discipline
- Moral instruction and behavioural assessment
- Continuous evaluation by coordinators and senior servers
Out of the many young persons who initially enrolled for the programme, only 18 successfully completed the process, a testament to the high standards maintained by the association.
Observers noted that the screening process ensures that only those who demonstrate commitment, discipline, and genuine interest in service are admitted.

Akahi News gathered that many priests and church leaders began their spiritual journey as altar servers, making the role a foundational experience in Catholic vocation.
By engaging young persons early, the Church not only strengthens its liturgical life but also contributes to shaping morally upright individuals who can positively influence society.

Reacting to the development, Mr. Iyaji Joseph, a former Diocesan Secretary of Altar Servers in Osogbo Catholic Diocese, congratulated the newly admitted members.
