Presidency’s Alleged Support Signals Early Political Alignment

Fresh political ripples have emerged in Osun State as reports indicate that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has thrown his weight behind Bola Oyebamiji ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

The development, which is already stirring debate within political circles, is seen by observers as an early indication of shifting alignments as the state prepares for another electoral contest.

According to Akahi News, the claim was made in a statement issued by the Oyebamiji media office and signed by Adebayo Adedeji, who attributed the President’s reported support to Oyebamiji’s perceived competence, performance, and leadership capacity.

Yet, this raises a fundamental question: In democratic contests, should endorsements outweigh the independent judgment of the electorate?

APC Lists Alleged Failures in Public Infrastructure

In justifying its position, the Osun chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) criticised the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke, alleging neglect and underutilisation of key federal projects within the state.

The party cited several facilities it claimed have remained either abandoned or underused, including the Child and Mother Care Hospital in Osogbo, reportedly inactive for over three years, the 80-bed SDG Hospital in Ipetumodu said to have been abandoned since 2023, and the Skills Acquisition Centre in Iragbiji.

Additionally, concerns were raised over the Alternative High School for Girls in Osogbo, a project linked to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, which the APC alleged has not been effectively utilised.

According to Akahi News, these claims form part of a broader narrative by the opposition seeking to question the performance of the current administration.

But this prompts a deeper reflection: Are infrastructural assessments in politics always objective—or are they often shaped by partisan lenses?

Debt Relief Controversy Adds to Political Tension

The APC also took aim at the Adeleke administration over its handling of a 2024 federal debt relief initiative, noting that the state’s debt profile was reportedly reduced by nearly ₦60 billion.

The party alleged that the government presented the development as its sole achievement, rather than acknowledging federal intervention.

This dimension introduces another layer of complexity: In governance, where does credit truly belong—in the origin of policy or its implementation?

Adeleke Camp Yet to Respond

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from Governor Ademola Adeleke or his administration regarding the claims made by the APC or the reported endorsement by President Tinubu.

Political analysts note that such silence may be strategic, particularly in the early stages of what is expected to become a highly competitive race.

According to Akahi News, stakeholders are watching closely to see how the Adeleke camp will frame its response, especially as narratives around performance and federal alignment begin to dominate discussions.

The Power of Endorsement vs. The Voice of the People

While endorsements from influential figures like the President can shape political momentum, history suggests that electoral outcomes are ultimately determined by the electorate.

This raises yet another philosophical question: Does political backing guarantee victory, or is it merely one piece in a larger puzzle of public trust, perception, and grassroots connection?

The reported support of President Tinubu for Bola Oyebamiji has added a new dimension to Osun’s political landscape, setting the stage for intensified debate ahead of the governorship election.

As accusations and counter-narratives continue to unfold, the focus will likely shift to performance, credibility, and the ability of each contender to connect with the people.

In the end, the defining question remains: Will Osun voters be swayed by endorsements, or will they chart their own independent course at the ballot box?
