Osun State Polytechnic Iree Halts Final Year Celebrations Amid Disorder, Shifts Focus to Exams
In a decisive move to restore order on campus, the management of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree (OSPOLY) has suspended the ongoing Final Year Brethren (FYB) celebrations with immediate effect. The announcement, detailed in an internal memorandum from the Registrar’s Office dated September 8, 2025, cites students’ inability to conduct themselves in an orderly manner during the festivities as the primary reason for the halt.

The FYB event, a longstanding tradition marking the transition of graduating students, has been a highlight of the academic calendar but has increasingly drawn scrutiny for instances of rowdiness. “This suspension is due to the inability of the students to comport themselves in orderly manner during the celebrations,” the memo states, emphasizing the need for a conducive environment ahead of critical assessments.
In response, OSPOLY has declared an official examination break for all full-time students, effective immediately from September 8. This period is designed to allow adequate preparation for the second-semester exams of the 2024/2025 academic session, which remain on track to commence on Monday, September 15, 2025. Students have been directed to vacate the campus premises promptly and ensure their registrations are up to date.
“All students are to comply with the provisions of this memo in their own interest,” the document concludes, signed by Registrar Dr. Abiodun Oloyede. The directive underscores the institution’s commitment to academic priorities, especially with just one week until exams begin.
This development follows a pattern of regulatory efforts at OSPOLY to curb excesses during student events. In October 2024, the polytechnic issued guidelines urging moderation in sign-out ceremonies to ensure safety and simplicity. Similar closures have occurred in the past, such as a two-week break in September 2023 prompted by internal unrest.
As of now, there have been no public statements from student unions or reports of further disruptions, though the decision has sparked discussions on social media about balancing tradition with discipline. OSPOLY, established in 1992 as a full-fledged institution, continues to prioritize a structured academic environment for its over 20,000 students across ND and HND programs.
