Over 2,000 Arrests Made in US College Pro-Palestinian Protests, Biden Urges Peaceful Demonstrations

In a significant escalation of tensions on college campuses across the United States, the number of arrests related to pro-Palestinian protests has surpassed 2,000. The Associated Press reports that police detained over 300 demonstrators from Wednesday night into Thursday morning, contributing to a rapidly growing tally.

Significant arrests occurred at the University of California, Los Angeles, where police dismantled a fortified encampment, leading to over 200 student arrests. Dartmouth College in New Hampshire also saw a major crackdown with more than 90 students detained. Additional arrests were reported at the University of New Hampshire and the University of Buffalo. In Oregon, authorities intervened at a university library that had been occupied by protesters since Monday.

Amid these unfolding events, President Joe Biden made a statement on Thursday morning emphasizing the distinction between peaceful and violent protest. “We are not an authoritarian nation where we silence people or squash dissent,” Biden asserted. “But,” he continued, “order must prevail.”

The President firmly criticized the disruptive actions of some demonstrators. “Violent protest is not protected – peaceful protest is,” he stated. He went on to list actions such as vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, and forcing the cancellation of classes and graduations, labeling them as non-peaceful forms of protest.

This surge in protests and the subsequent crackdown have sparked a nationwide debate about the limits of peaceful protest and the appropriate response to civil unrest, particularly in educational settings that are typically seen as bastions of free expression.
