Pandemonium in Kano as Irate Fans Attack Match Officials After NPFL Clash Between Kano Pillars and Shooting Stars
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
There was chaos at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Sunday evening after Kano Pillars fans went on a rampage, attacking match officials and some Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) players following a dramatic Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) encounter.
According to News360 Nigeria, the trouble began immediately after the referee blew the final whistle, moments after 3SC’s Adams Mustapha scored a last-gasp equaliser that levelled the score at 1–1.

How the Chaos Erupted
Mustapha Jibrin had earlier given Kano Pillars the lead in the ninth minute, setting the tone for what looked like a comfortable home win. However, deep into stoppage time, Shooting Stars’ relentless push for an equaliser paid off — but it came at a heavy cost.
Eyewitnesses reported that a section of the home supporters, infuriated by the late goal, began hurling objects onto the pitch. Within minutes, a full-scale pitch invasion ensued, with irate fans chasing match officials and players. Viral videos circulating on social media show several fans running directly toward the referees, throwing missiles and landing punches in an apparent attempt to vent their frustration.
Players and Officials Caught in the Mayhem
It wasn’t just the match officials who bore the brunt of the attack. Some Shooting Stars players and backroom staff were also assaulted as the situation spiralled out of control. Reports indicate that 3SC players Ismail Ayodele and Adams Agba’a suffered head injuries during the violent outburst.
Security personnel eventually intervened, firing teargas to disperse the crowd and create a safe passage for players and officials. Videos showed the match officials and visiting team being escorted off the pitch under tight security amid a visibly shaken atmosphere.
NPFL’s Growing Concern Over Fan Violence
This latest incident once again highlights the recurring problem of fan violence in Nigerian football. Despite the NPFL’s efforts to sanitise the league and make match venues safer, outbreaks of crowd trouble continue to threaten the integrity and appeal of the competition.
Football analysts and observers told Akahi News that the Nigerian football authorities must act decisively to curb this menace before it undermines the league’s credibility.
“If strong disciplinary actions are not taken, such behaviour will only embolden more fans to resort to violence whenever results don’t go their way,” one sports analyst warned.
This is not the first time Kano Pillars have been linked to violent fan behaviour. The club has faced multiple sanctions in the past for crowd disturbances, with some of their home games previously played behind closed doors as punishment.
Possible Sanctions and Broader Implications
With the NPFL and Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) monitoring the situation, disciplinary action is likely to follow. Sanctions could include fines, stadium bans, or even points deductions if the club is found culpable of failing to control its supporters.
Observers also noted that the incident could affect Kano Pillars’ reputation and sponsorship appeal, as corporate partners increasingly shy away from associations with violent fan cultures.
The NPFL management, as of press time, has yet to release an official statement, but expectations are high that an investigation will be launched promptly to identify the culprits and prevent a recurrence.
Akahi News Insight
Fan violence remains one of the biggest obstacles to the professional growth of Nigerian football. Beyond disciplinary measures, experts suggest that clubs must invest in fan education, security training, and community engagement initiatives to promote sportsmanship and discourage aggression.
As Akahi News observed, restoring public confidence in the NPFL requires consistent enforcement of rules and collaboration between club management, security agencies, and the league body. The beautiful game can only thrive when the safety of players, officials, and fans is guaranteed.
