Akure Magistrate’s Court Sentences Pastor to Two Years Imprisonment for Shop Break-in
A 29-year-old pastor, Friday Okeneji, has been handed a two-year prison sentence by the Akure Magistrate’s Court after being found guilty of breaking into a shop and stealing chemical substances worth N130,000.
Okeneji, who serves as the presiding pastor of a church in Iwaro Oka Akoko, Ondo State, committed the offenses on July 2, 2023, in Iwaro Oka Akoko.
During the court proceedings, the pastor pleaded guilty to the two-count charge brought against him and confessed that he resorted to the crime out of desperation to survive. He explained that he lacked any means of livelihood and was compelled to commit the offense.
In his statement, Okeneji revealed, “I needed to raise N150,000 for my mother’s burial, which is scheduled for August, and I had no means of obtaining the money.”
In delivering the verdict, Magistrate Damilola Sekoni convicted Okeneji on the two counts and ruled that the prison term would run concurrently. Alternatively, the pastor could pay a fine of N100,000.
