Pastor Re-Arraigned in Lagos Over Alleged Sexual Abuse of Minor

A Lagos-based pastor and legal practitioner, Aka-Bashorun Olawale Akanni, serving at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), was on Wednesday re-arraigned before Justice Hakeem Oshodi of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, over allegations of sexually abusing a minor.

Akanni, who had previously been arraigned in a Magistrate’s Court, faces a one-count charge for the indecent treatment of a 14-year-old girl at Iwaya, Lagos. The offence, according to the Lagos State Government, involved fondling the minor’s breasts, an act that contravenes Section 135 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

During the proceedings, Akanni pleaded not guilty to the charge, with his defence counsel, Morenikeji Oyekunle, urging the court to maintain the bail previously granted, arguing that her client complied with all conditions and posed no flight risk, being both a clergyman and lawyer. The prosecution, led by Funmilola Aluko, opposed any changes to the bail arrangement.

Justice Oshodi ruled to uphold the bail conditions previously granted, emphasizing that the defendant must attend every adjourned court date. The court also confirmed the presence of the complainant, now 27 years old, who was ready to testify against the accused.

Testimony of the Complainant

In her evidence, the complainant revealed that she first met Akanni through her father, a member of the RCCG on Lagos Island. She narrated that in 2010, at the age of eight, she moved in with the defendant’s family to improve academically and participate in the church choir.

She alleged that during her stay, Akanni began to molest her both sexually and physically, administering harsh punishments whenever her school performance was deemed unsatisfactory. The complainant eventually ran away and reported the matter to her parents, formally lodging a complaint in 2023 after learning of similar alleged abuse involving another minor in the same church.

Under cross-examination, she stated that she initially confided in her class teacher, Mrs Akingbeoyewa, about the abuse while still residing with the defendant.

Court Adjournment and Next Steps

At the close of the witness’s testimony, the defence requested an adjournment to obtain a Certified True Copy of her evidence. The prosecution opposed further delays, citing potential emotional distress to the witness.

Justice Oshodi granted the adjournment, invoking Section 193 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law and awarding a cost of N50,000 in favour of the witness, payable by the defence before the next hearing. The trial has now been adjourned to December 9, 2025, for continuation.
