A deadly clash between operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the Amaeze community of Ivo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, has claimed the life of a police officer and left others injured.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, reportedly started when three police Hilux vans conveying about 30 officers intercepted an NSCDC vehicle transporting mining equipment to a site in the area. Eyewitnesses alleged that the police team opened fire on the civil defence van, triggering a confrontation.

During the fracas, a policeman identified as Shedrack was killed by a stray bullet fired by his colleagues in the process of trying to disarm an NSCDC officer. Other officers sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Confirming the development, the Chairman of Ivo Local Government, Emmanuel Ajah, said he received reports from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) that the clash indeed led to the death of one policeman. He added that the deceased officer’s body had been deposited in a mortuary, while the injured were receiving treatment.

However, the Ebonyi State Police Command offered a different account of the incident. In a statement issued by its spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, the command said its officers were on duty to arrest suspects named in a petition when NSCDC operatives obstructed them.

According to Ukandu, the suspects had already agreed to follow the police, but the NSCDC team leader allegedly blocked their vehicle and attempted to seize a rifle from one of the officers. In the struggle, the weapon discharged, fatally injuring the policeman.

He further disclosed that the NSCDC officer involved had been arrested, assuring that a full investigation was ongoing. “No individual or institution has the authority to obstruct the police in carrying out their constitutional duties,” Ukandu stressed.

The incident has stirred fresh concerns over inter-agency rivalry between Nigeria’s security forces, raising calls for better collaboration to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
