Police Refund Bail Money, Remove DPO Over Alleged Extortion of Good Samaritan
The Delta State Police Command has taken disciplinary action against a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Asaba following public outrage over the alleged extortion and intimidation of a man who attempted to save the life of a stranger that collapsed on the road.
The incident, which sparked widespread condemnation on social media, involved a Nigerian man, Tomi Akporoghene Wojuola, who reportedly rushed an unconscious stranger to the hospital in a desperate bid to save his life. Sadly, the victim was pronounced dead on arrival.

How a Rescue Attempt Turned Into an Ordeal
According to accounts gathered by Akahi News, Wojuola said he subsequently sought police involvement, in line with standard procedure. However, instead of receiving support, he alleged that officers at the GRA Police Station in Asaba detained him and treated him as a criminal.
He reportedly claimed that his statement was taken under caution and that he was accused of murder despite clear explanations that he was acting as a good samaritan. The situation, he said, deteriorated further after the Divisional Police Officer allegedly subjected him to verbal intimidation.
Observers noted that the incident reflects a recurring public concern about the treatment of citizens who engage law enforcement agencies in sensitive circumstances, particularly where deaths are involved.
Allegations of Extortion and Abuse of Authority
Wojuola further alleged that he was only released after the intervention of a highly placed government official. More troubling, he claimed that a substantial amount of money was withdrawn from his account under the guise of bail, leaving him with a negligible balance.
Such allegations have reignited conversations around police accountability, the legality of bail procedures, and the persistent issue of extortion within some units of the Nigeria Police Force. Analysts believe that incidents like this discourage citizens from assisting others in emergencies, ultimately undermining communal responsibility and trust.
Police Respond, DPO Removed and Bail Refunded
Providing an official update, the Delta State Police Command confirmed that disciplinary measures had been taken. The Police Public Relations Officer disclosed that the DPO involved had been removed from his position, sanctioned accordingly, and that the money collected as bail had been fully refunded to the complainant.
Akahi News gathered that the command acted swiftly after reviewing the circumstances surrounding the case, in a move widely interpreted as an attempt to restore public confidence.
Wojuola later confirmed the development, expressing gratitude for the intervention and thanking Nigerians who amplified his story until action was taken.
Broader Implications for Policing in Nigeria
The incident has once again brought the issue of police reform into sharp focus. Civil society groups and concerned citizens argue that while disciplinary actions are commendable, sustained structural reforms and strict enforcement of internal regulations are necessary to prevent similar occurrences.
Analysts believe that transparent sanctions against erring officers, coupled with public communication, are crucial steps toward rebuilding trust between the police and the public.
While the removal of the DPO and the refund of the bail money mark a positive outcome, the episode underscores the urgent need for continued oversight and accountability within the police force. As Nigerians await deeper reforms, many hope that acts of compassion will no longer be met with fear or punishment.
