Police Release Lawyer Arrested in Kano After Mistaken Identity Incident
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
A moment of relief came on Tuesday as human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the release of Hamza Uba ESQ., a legal practitioner who was arrested in Kano and later transported to Abuja in what authorities have now admitted was a case of mistaken identity.

Adeyanju, in a statement on his official Facebook page, revealed that the Nigerian Police had apologised for the wrongful arrest following interventions by key stakeholders, including the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Kano Branch and the Chairman of the NBA Human Rights Committee at the headquarters.
“We have just secured the release of our colleague, Hamza Uba ESQ., arrested in Kano and brought to Abuja, a clear case of mistaken identity. The police have apologized for the error. Let me thank the Chairman of NBA Kano for escalating the issue to us and the Chairman of NBA Human Rights Committee HQ,” Adeyanju wrote.
The incident sparked concerns within the legal and human rights community, highlighting recurring issues of wrongful arrests and the need for better investigative processes before detentions.
Observers say the swift intervention by the NBA underscores the association’s growing role in defending the rights of its members and ensuring accountability in law enforcement operations across the country.
For now, lawyers and rights advocates are calling on authorities to strengthen internal checks to prevent similar mistakes that could infringe on the rights of innocent citizens.
