Police Restore Calm After Ocha Brigade-Traders Clash in Onitsha Main Market

The Anambra State Police Command has restored normalcy in Onitsha Main Market after a violent altercation between traders and personnel of the Ocha Brigade, an environmental law enforcement outfit, left seven traders with gunshot injuries on Tuesday, 9th September 2025.

According to Akahi News findings, the incident, which occurred in the early hours, escalated rapidly, causing widespread tension within the market.

Police Swiftly Intervene

Upon receiving the distress call, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, MNIPS, PhD, immediately deployed tactical teams led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations. They were accompanied by the Area Commander Onitsha, the Divisional Police Officer Main Market, and the Commander of the Anti-Cultism Squad.

The operatives successfully restored peace, calming the traders and dispersing crowds back to their lawful businesses.

Casualties and Ongoing Treatment

The victims of the gunshots were identified as Mr. Ebuka Orakwe, Orum Oluebube, Anthony Kosisochukwu, Ifeoma Ezema, Chinwe Igwe (22 years), and two others yet to be named.

Tragically, Miss Chinwe Igwe was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital. Her remains have been deposited for autopsy and preservation, while the other victims are reportedly responding positively to treatment.

Suspects to Face Prosecution

In a statement, the Anambra State Police Command confirmed extending an invitation to the management of the Ocha Brigade to identify the personnel involved for possible prosecution. The Command assured that patrols and monitoring will continue to prevent further escalation.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, reiterated that normalcy has since been restored.
