Fresh concerns over insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria have emerged following the abduction of a Catholic priest and several residents during a violent attack on Karku community in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The incident, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of Saturday, also left three persons dead, deepening fears among residents already grappling with recurring violence.

Akahi News gathered that suspected bandits stormed the community at about 3:20 a.m., attacking homes and abducting residents, including Rev. Fr. Nathaniel Asuwaye, the parish priest of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Karku.

According to a statement issued by the Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan, Rev. Fr. Jacob Shanet, the attackers reportedly arrived in an organised manner and overwhelmed the community before carrying out the abduction. Residents were said to have described the assailants as terrorists who invaded the area under cover of darkness.

The statement confirmed that three residents lost their lives during the attack. They were identified as Mr. Jacob Dan’azumi, Mr. Maitala Kaura, and Alhaji Kusari. Several others were reportedly taken away by the gunmen alongside the priest.

Observers say the timing and coordination of the attack highlight ongoing security challenges in rural communities across Kaduna State, where residents often remain vulnerable during night-time assaults. Akahi News learnt that the incident has once again renewed calls for improved security presence in affected communities.

Diocese Expresses Sadness, Calls for Prayers

The Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as painful and troubling for both the church and the wider community. In its appeal, the diocese called on priests, Christian faithful, and people of goodwill to pray for the safe return of the abducted victims.

The statement also urged prayers for the repose of the souls of those who were killed during the attack, noting that the victims were being remembered in faith amid the ongoing crisis.

Religious leaders and community stakeholders have continued to emphasise unity and calm, urging residents not to resort to retaliation while security agencies work towards resolving the situation. Akahi News gathered that similar appeals have followed previous attacks in the region, as communities struggle to maintain normal life amid persistent security threats.

Recurring Security Concerns in Kaduna Communities

Kaduna State has in recent years experienced repeated incidents involving abductions and armed attacks, particularly in rural areas. Analysts believe that the pattern reflects deeper security challenges, including difficult terrain, limited security coverage, and the growing sophistication of armed groups operating in parts of the region.

Community leaders have repeatedly called for stronger collaboration between security agencies and local vigilante groups, alongside intelligence-driven operations aimed at preventing further attacks. While authorities have intensified efforts in some areas, residents say fear and uncertainty remain part of daily life.

Security observers note that attacks involving religious leaders often attract national attention, further highlighting the urgent need for sustainable solutions to insecurity affecting both Christian and Muslim communities alike.

A Community in Mourning, A Nation Watching

The abduction of Rev. Fr. Nathaniel Asuwaye and others has once again drawn attention to the human cost of insecurity, as families await news of their loved ones while mourning those already lost. The call for prayers by the diocese reflects both spiritual hope and the reality faced by communities seeking comfort amid tragedy.

As investigations and security efforts continue, many Nigerians are watching closely, hoping for the safe release of the abducted victims and renewed commitment towards lasting peace in affected regions.
