As Nigeria marks her 65th Independence Anniversary, a coalition of prominent political leaders, labour activists, and civil society groups is set to hold a National Electoral Reforms Dialogue aimed at charting a credible pathway to the 2027 general elections.

The event, scheduled for October 1, will feature former President Goodluck Jonathan, ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former INEC Chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega as key discussants.
In a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday by the Secretary of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Mallam Hamisu San Turaki, the dialogue will also host several other notable figures. They include President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero; Trade Union Congress (TUC) President, Festus Osofo; and former Minister of Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili.
Other expected participants are former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi; political economist, Prof. Pat Utomi; and former Kaduna lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani.
Organisers and Partners
The initiative is being organised by the National Consultative Front (NCFront) and the Labour and Civil Society Front (LCSF), in partnership with the Nigeria Electoral Reforms Coalition (NERCO) and Partners for Electoral Reforms.
According to the organisers, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, chairmen of the Senate and House Committees on Electoral Reforms, as well as senior INEC officials, are also billed to attend.
Focus on 2027 Elections
With Nigeria’s 2027 general elections drawing closer, the dialogue will centre on critical constitutional amendments and strategies to enhance transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness in the electoral system.
The event, while commemorating Nigeria’s independence milestone, underscores the urgent call for reforms that will guarantee free, fair, and credible elections. Stakeholders believe the conversation will set the tone for institutional changes needed to deepen democracy and restore public confidence in the electoral process.
Akahi News gathered that the dialogue represents one of the most significant multi-stakeholder engagements on electoral reforms in recent years, bringing together voices across political, civil, and labour fronts.
