Qatar Imposes Stricter Visa Rules for Nigerian Travellers

The Qatari Ministry of Interior has announced sweeping new visa regulations for Nigerian travellers, citing recent cases of overstays as the primary reason behind the decision. The new rules, which take immediate effect, significantly alter eligibility and application requirements for tourist and transit visas.

According to information obtained by Akahi News, the updated policy mandates that travellers must secure a confirmed return transfer and valid hotel reservation before their visa applications will be processed. Furthermore, the ministry has tightened eligibility conditions, restricting visa applications to only females or families. Male travellers will no longer qualify for visas unless they are travelling with their families.

In a further move aimed at tightening controls, the Qatari authorities now require that only 5-star hotel bookings will be accepted for visa approval. This means visitors planning to stay in budget or mid-range hotels will not meet the visa requirements under the new policy.

Officials confirmed that the changes apply not only to fresh applications but also to all pending visa requests, effectively resetting the entire process for Nigerian travellers.

The latest policy shift has sparked concerns among frequent Nigerian visitors to Qatar, especially those travelling for tourism and short business trips. Travel agencies across Nigeria have begun adjusting their advisory services to align with the new regulations, warning clients of the implications for upcoming travel plans.

Stakeholders fear the new rules could impact bilateral relations and reduce visitor traffic to the Gulf nation from Nigeria. However, Qatari officials insist the measures are necessary to curb overstays and ensure better compliance with visa terms.
